Both are overjets. There two kinds of overjet - a skeletal and a dental one. A dental one is simply when the teeth are not aligned but is much less common. A skeletal overjet is the one you guys most likely have. It is fixable when you are going through growth spurts(ideally around age 11) using orthodontic appliances. But if you are past puberty and still have a skeletal overjet the only real way to fix it is using surgery.

Let your teeth reach a natural resting position, then clamp them down together. Do they come down naturally? Or is one set in front of the other? If your top teeth jut out further, you have overbite. If your bottom teeth jut out further, you have underbite. If they're roughly aligned, congrats. You have a proper jaw alignment.

It is basically impossible to have top and bottom teeth perfectly on top of each other. What is preferred if perfect alignment is not possible is for the top teeth to be in front of the bottom teeth but for there to be contact. Otherwise, you have an open bite.
