a lot of people simply just aren't aware that everything they do is meaningless in the face of the eternal abyss and live their lives in blissful ignorance, working some shit job, marrying some ugly wife and having some stupid children thinking they'll leave any impact on the world.

those who are aware either fill their time with working and trying to leave some temporal legacy, or they wallow in self-pity and use the "nothing I do has any ultimate signifance" line to justify their lack of effort and discipline.

I believe otherwise. You look at music, film, tv, poetry, philosophy, history: all of it is about the struggle of meaninglessness and the face of death. Everyone is aware of it. Just not talked about in the open as much because it reminds us and is a bummer.

Dopamine, oxytocin, seratonin keep people from dwelling on it or letting it get to them.

They're certainly aware of the fact, it just doesn't really matter due to these chemicals effects on the brain. No more, no less.
