if you watch enough of a sport you start to learn about it and get invested. get your favorite team, favorite player. eventually you can start predicting who will win games. some people even bet money. and the skill and practice these athletes show can not be denied.

its just another idle hobby, but it has the perk of being mainstream enough that you can use it as a topic for conversation. it can be fun to care about things.

Not him but I do sometimes. Sports anime is OK because it doesn't just show them playing sports though. You see their daily lives, their back stories, hopes, dreams, wins and failures. I would doubt that most people watch Haikyuu because they love men's volleyball. Plus, and this is more of my pet peeve that makes me want to avoid something altogether, the commercialization of sports, esp. Football, is ugly to me, and significantly takes away from the experience.
