Anyways, his issue with alcoholism was the similar to the problem he had with Christianity (and ultimately any religious escapism, he only attacks Christianity so much because it's the dominant faith in Europe at the time), he had no problem with Jesus, but the Christian church wasn't life affirming. It told you to behave properly in this life because this life doesn't matter, this life is shit, wait for your reward in the next.

Alcohol is just a way of numbing your pain, your pain and learning how to cope with it is essential to your flourishing as a human. You are subverting your will to power by numbing the pain instead of conquering it. Nietzsche writes of the Last Men in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the man who avoids all pain and struggle by letting it wash over him as he enjoys his bread and circuses. He claims he has found happiness, but blinks when he says it.

In The Will to Power, Nietzsche takes this a step farther, he believes that EVERYTHING has a 'will to power', while Schopenhauer believed that life existed due to a 'will to live', Nietzsche said that wasn't enough, life doesn't simply want to live, but that life lives to grow, life lives to create life. Life creates its own value. And not just living things, everything to the atomic level had a will to exert itself upon the universe.

And that last part is why, according to Nietzsche, you should make your own morality. The purpose for existence is to grow and flourish, a tree, a dog and a fish all require different inputs to achieve this optimally. Broken down, a Chihuahua, a Greyhound, and a Basset Hound all require different inputs to grow and flourish. Why should we assume that humans can all grow with the same education?

Nietzsche himself says that his views are a perspective and should not be taken as universal truth (which he does not concern himself with, for if this exists men will never find it in his view). Use them if it behooves you, if it doesn't, don't.

Nietzsche, for better or worse, is with us today more than any other philosopher of the 19th century. Other philosophers of the day, many of his peers hated him, for he hated philosophy and according to Heidegger's interpretations of his works, he struck the killing blow against western metaphysics, undermining all work before him.
