Anyone feel that the 00s were kind of like an "updated" version of the late 90s (i.e. awesome) until 2006-2007ish or so, when the Bieber iPhone social media trash garbage shit charmless era started?
People like to say "muh 9/11" and "muh Iraq War" changed everything. Politically, they most certainly did, but pop culturally? Not really, or at least not immediately. I remember a lot of the late 90s things lasting until 2005, well into Dubya's presidency.
Watch a movie like Mean Girls. Came out in 2004, but it could've just as easily came out in 1998. Then look at something like Hannah Montana: The movie. It was released only 4 years later, but it feels like a totally different universe - a "shinier, more modern" plane of existence.
Sooo, what you're saying is that the 2000s was a boring ass, war-filled, generation with 0 personality that everyone will look over and forget? Kind of like the 40s of the previous century?
I notice that when people on this board say "I miss the early 2000s", they tend to lump 2004-2007ish into that definition, despite those being mid-2000s.
Is "early 2000s" just easier to say than "early-mid 2000s"?
The user-friendliness of the internet was its downfall.
When people refer to the "golden age" of the web, they refer to the time when it was mostly non-normies using it, because normies had no reason to use it. Meanwhile we were all browsing our obscure forums, edgy comedy sites, and playing vidya. The most normies did was send emails or look at online catalogs.
Social media particularly is what started the collapse, it literally reeled the normies in. And soon places like ebaums, youtube, and eventually 4chan reached memetic status and transformed into platforms to generate revenue. People started making vlogs for the sole purpose of generating popularity and money, instead of creating endearing videos they pour their soul into. Memes became forced, they no longer arose naturally as the abstract comedic devices they were meant to be, but rather became warped by the normie masses who were entertained, intrigued, but did not fully understand. Our sacred spaces were desecrated, and we've descended into a whirlwind of post-irony and nihilism.
Things today are way better then they were 10 years ago, but you are a overgrown child with a lack of backbone unable to understand how great things actually now underneath your own wallowing delusion of degrandeur. Faggot
>like the 60s
>a time period with great pop culture
>comparing 2000s popculture to 60s pop culture
Kek, you can't be serious Anon. How can you even say something like that? I can't even name one popular band/pop-star from the 2000s other than Miley Cyrus or Coldplay.
>2006-2007 was when the world started going downhill
Oh really? You mean the year when you turned 12 years old?
Ask any person from any age range, and they will tell you that the peak of culture and civilisation just happened to occur when they were 12 years old.
Uh, technology, life in general. Stop living in the past man.
>His point was everyone thinks it all turned to shit when they turned 12. I'm an oldfag and the early 90s was the peak of everything for me. It's all relative.
And here's my counter point: If 2007 wasn't so bad, name something that got better after that.
IT WAS ABSOLUTE SHIT.
Do you know how many times I had to hear Gwen Stefani spell Bananas? I will never misspell that word ever again. The early 00's felt like the most materialistic years ever. Worse than Bieber and the iPhone.
>deliberately continuing to be this stupid
The world is is good and as bad as it has ever been. It is pleb tier and intellectually weak to be incapable of seeing that it is you who has changed, not the world around you.
No, I'm not saying any of the things you keep bringing into the conversation that haven't been mentioned in the slightest.
You're clearly an unintelligent pleb and happy to stay that way.
>still being this stupid
You lost when you refused to accept your perspective shapes your interpretations of the world around you. You openly admitted it when you tried to change the subject.
You seem desperate to have how dumb you are pointed out to you.
I've always maintained the 90's ended somewhere between 2004 and 2005. It was also directly linked to the urban market getting into, and the the decline of skateboarding/skateboarding games.
>definitely apple influencing modern aesthetics was the end of an era
What're you talking about? They haven't influenced shit. They just make cool ass phones and PC's, stop falling for the Mr. Robot "internet corporations going to take over the world and monitor you OY Vey! Even though the Internet is one of the biggest platforms for free speech and individualistic expression you shouldn't like it Goy, and not just because it threatens to undermine our traditional media brainwashing and propaganda" meme.
We're not debating now. You're desperately trying to reframe the story and change the argument and I'm calmly laughing at you and wondering how long you're going to take to accept you were wrong and stop throwing tantrums
>desperation, subject changing, random tangents all designed to try to distance yourself from the shame of being wrong
>le u r why the internet is bad le maymay
You're a emotionally and intellectually flawed child. Sort your shit out.
>le ur troll!
You were wrong. You were told very clearly why you were wrong but you lack the maturity and intelligence to accept this. It's not my problem your flaws prevent you from accepting this.
I remember the vast potential of the internet. I remember reading something late 90's early 2000's that talked about how the internet was going to be this great frontier where the idea was king; where race, gender, sexuality etc were irrelevant since you were just a digital persona.
Maybe it was idealistic, but there just seemed like so much potential there.
You are pathetic my man
I totes feel ya my man, I mean
up to 2007 we had all the best shit, people played both psx and ps2, football was way better then too, as well as many things. After that time society succumbed into the millenial's domain
Social media is absolute trash. I get a visceral reaction when seeing normies post their dumb bullshit on every website they invade. And I hate how nowadays all this social media nonsense is incorporated into almost every website.
>every song 2008 and on is pop shit with a constant untz untz untz electronic baseline
>society succumbed into the millenial's domain
>using words you don't understand
Millennials are 20s and 30s, i.e. people who had their childhoods in the pre-2007, pre-smartphone era.
Xbox nostalgia. Fuck you op. I didn't even play taht much. Then why do I feel that much.
Maybe it's because I was a teen during that time, but I also feel that it started really going downhill at circa 2006-7.
Early 00's still had that 90's vibe but a certain modernity. Still, what the hell happaned around 2007 that everything started turning to shit? I can't believe it's just us ''growing up''. Was it maybe
It was smartphones becoming a major, common item that, coupled with social media, caused a constant link to one's life on and off the computer, with the constant ability to bring one's real life into the internet by anyone at any time.
Apple hits it big and suddenly everything needs to be "sleek" and "simple" and over-underdesigned by a bunch of pot smoking photoshop jockeys. It was the general trend of things but Apple's massive success brought about the final nail in Web 1.0's coffin
I really miss the days where it was just forums/messengers, and there was an unspoken rule that you do not put yourself out there to be seen by anyone. You would actually take the time to get to know someone before revealing any form of personal information, but mostly you would just know people on an alias basis.
Now I can look into any faggots life and it's all there to see neatly on a web page that they had done themselves. This is where all the SJW nonsense has come from, with all their victim hood. They simply cannot distinguish between real life and the internet anymore, so calling them a cunt or even telling them to end themselves is the same to them as if you would have walked up to them and said it to their face while being physically imposing.
Amazing how times have changed.
I completely agree. The whole western culture and just a general vibe about everything (from tv shows, sports, movies etc) had a change from the worse post 2007. I feel like 2007 was the last great year.
>the internet will never become the wild frontier with no care for gender, race or yadda yadda.
This hurts the most.
Nowadays, bunch of fucking normalfags refer to the "deep web" as "a place where everybody can be somebody with no repercussions" as if it never fucking happened before in the internet.
I swear to god. Fuck social media. Fuck all of that. Youtube? More like multimillion dollar corporation tube. Fucking christ.
and don't get me started on 9gag.
The internet was suppose to be a place with no need for identity, but identity politics is all we talk about.
music is art, doesn't matter if it's bad or not. it's at least culture in some form.
read this you fucking cancer. you are contributing to junk data. you and your friends posting yet another selfie together is contributing to the endless garbage of the internet. you're facebook/google's little consumer bitch.
>you and your friends posting yet another selfie together is contributing to the endless garbage of the internet. you're facebook/google's little consumer bitch.
Back then, people would take pictures for memories and fun.
Nowadays, the first thing that comes into their mind is a "like" on Facebook or Instashit.
You know how much this fucking hurts as a deontologist?
i only take a picture of something if i think it's cool.
people taking so many photos of themselves/their friends = they think they're cool i.e. have such a high opinion of themselves that they think that many people want to see what they look like and what they do on a DAILY BASIS.
the fucking ego that these people have blows my mind. i'm completely against censorship of the internet but at this point when i look at how gluttonous and unapologetically narcissistic/ egotistic SO MANY people are, i start to think that maybe it would be a good thing if we limited this shit. the human population just can't help themselves, they're animals.
>unapologetically narcissistic/ egotistic SO MANY people are
Just imagine. A lot of people where already egoistic before, with parents telling them that they're special and so on. Now, add a sprinkle dose of facebook likes giving them validation, and you get extremely narcissistic people.
The worse part, in order to even feel more "important", they try to act unique but they end up acting and thinking as the same as other people. It's fucking horrible. People share photos not for fun, but for likes. People share jokes/memes not for fun, but for likes. And the absolute worst of all: People CREATE content not because they have a true passion in it, but just for likes.
It ruins all the fun.
My dream is to become like a Caesar-figure one day, have massive influence all over the world, and secretly assassinate the creators of Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
I'd be doubting killing Twitter though, since sometimes it can be really informative. Anyways, just imagine the social change from those 4 being destroyed, huh? Back to the "dark ages" of sending email. All normans would be fucking rekt.
No. You're nostalgia blind like every other person in history.
You're hard pressed to find a single thing that has gone downhill since the 00s.
>Bieber iPhone social media trash garbage shit charmless era
Boy bands / child pop icons existed long before Justin Bieber, in fact by the time he rolled around that fad had been dead for about 10 years.
>that pic tho
Damn, edgy 15 year olds are evolving bruh.
>dang that has big words, i'll just deflect this with calling him an edgy kid, heheh i'm so smart *likes sports vine* how many likes does my instagram pic have... only 12!? omg i'm a real loser robot
I actually look at decades as 5's not 0's. As in 1965-1975 have more in common than 1960-1970. And that applies to pop culture of all decades after as well imo. 1985-1995, 95-05, etc.

>Anonymous 02/06/16(Sat)22:38:35 No.26307586
>I was online that day too. Nothing makes me nostalgic quite like runescape. RS07 doesn't do it for me though.
It's not the 'big words' that make this edgy you faggot, it's how the creator of the shitty cringfest misuses those big words and phrases. Absolutely no sense of grammar, looks like he just copy pasted words from a thesaurus without bothering to learn the meaning of the words used, and his use of not with a bang doesn't make sense. I know you're an underage faggot and I know you took the time to type out that bullshit, but don't make it so obvious.
>looks like it was filmed in the 90's because of the clothes people were wearing, the cars on the street
>it was filmed in 2006
Autistic? You are the one who is autistic enough to think i'm underage. Get a life loser. All that matters is your facial aesthetics, and I am no DOUBT better looking than you. I have sunken in cheeks. A strong jaw. A straight hairline. Godly beard genetics. And what about you? You can probably only grow a neckbeard. You probably have a hairline that is just as bad as your gay lovers. You are probably some fatass gook cunt whose cheeks are so fat that nobody girl would ever fuck your ugly ass. Fat cunt
why are you so retarded and boring and not saying anything but "it's dumb doesnt make sense its stupid lol dumb idiot"
fuck you're so boring, i'm actually feeling bad for you. can't even troll right.
>It was released only 4 years later, but it feels like a totally different universe - a "shinier, more modern" plane of existence.
so before 1080p became the standard p much?
mean girls is garbage btw you must be a grill
So, not 15, more like 12? Have fun kiddies. It all goes down hill from here. If your Autismo levels are already this high at such a young age, you might aswell just hang yourself.
>It's like a bad television show that should have ended 3 seasons ago.
>Everything is fucking shit.
I agree with this, once the economic crash hit the culture went to shit alongside it.
And the warped culture warped everything else and also gave rise to all the social media and smart phones and such.
>tfw I was only 11 when it all started
>tfw I was in my first year of middle school
>tfw never even got to really experiance the good times
It's come to a point that the 00's are now considered nostalgic.
It was bad when people kept talking about the 90's, but this?
I was 17 during 2005 and I will tell you for a fact 2000-2007 was GOD TIER and everything to come after was SHIT TIER.
Normals ruined the internet. I don't even like using the internet anymore but its all I've got, even with all the awful vanity and fake shit.
shit, i was about to call you underage B& then realized how long ago that was.
i was in my freshmen year of college back in 2008, nobody had any idea what was happening since we were all swept up by Obama's election and college life, it wasnt until people went back home and realized there were no summer jobs to be had or beginning of sophomore year when students didnt come back to study.
the smart phone ruined everything
Normiephones allowed normals to shit the internet up 24/7 be they at home or in da club.
Now 50% of the internet is nothing but selfies and vanity. The internet used to be our escape from the real world but normals made it into an extension of it instead.
as the saying goes:
"shit rolls down-hill"
smartphones and social media were the game-changer. back in 2005-6 having a dumbphone, MSN or AIM messenger and a horribly-decorated myspace profile was the extent of your online social life.
>No good video games have come out since 2008
>The last good TV show came out in 2008
>the site started flooding with normies in 2009
Tested your theory, close. But it worked out to 16 for me
9/11 or 11/9 didn't change shit for the rest of the world apart from bullshit airplane restrictions. You self-centered Amerifat.
Also, things change, hunter gatherer brains don't like change that much, suck it up.
>the bass in that clip of Lose Yourself
Out of fucking control.
I remember once during that Whenever, Wherever video by Shakira I rubbed my dick on the tv. I was like eight and didn't know anything about sex but I just knew I needed to do it.
>Back then, people would take pictures for memories and fun.
>Nowadays, the first thing that comes into their mind is a "like" on Facebook or Instashit.
Oh man, this.
I like taking pictures and videos sometimes for memories. But now people, even my family, are hesitant sometimes to take vids because they think I'm gonna post it on some social media page.
I dont know how to explain it... people just think they gotta be perfect for the camera because thousands of people will be seeing the pics/vids, even though I just wanna store them for personal memories.
It wasn't even that long ago that you were encouraged to stay anonymous on the internet and avoid giving your real identity except in certain things, like your business website or something.
Now, people look at you weird if you don't have a FB or whatever.
It's not just me then. I turned 12 in 2000 and it was the best year of my life. The year after that was when the world started going downhill in my opinion (this may have something to do with me becoming a teenager and hitting puberty in 2001).
>smartphones, especially the iPhone
>Facebook, Twitter, other social media becoming mainstream
>the Internet in general starting to become mainstream (and ending - if it could be called that - in 2010 or 2011)
>video games becoming mainstream (started in early 2000s)
>The Big Bang Theory on TV
So probably it's mostly the appropriation of the nerd culture or whatever you want to call it.
I predict that just in a couple of years, people will be (unironically) nostalgic about the early (or even mid-) 2010s.
Now that I think about it, the late-'00s economic crash was maybe even a bigger factor of things becoming worse.
I think Resident Evil 4 was the last great video game.
00s didn't have a distinct personality like the 90s, 80s, and 70s did.
back when that Kylie Minogue video was released. Still fap to it
back when fucking Teenage Dirtbag was released
back when Nelly was cool as fuark
back when Destiny's Child was actually good
back when Christina Aguilera was hat
back when Avril Lavigne was qt as fuck
back when Black Eyed Pease actually made music
back when pop songs still had at least a tiny glimpse of originality and variety (These Words, Hollaback Girl, Rich Girl)
and then 2006/07 came. I know understand why that was the year I switched to onl the edgiest of edgy meal
In the mid to late 00s reality came into the internet with the popularization of social media. Suddenly everyone wanted to exist online and did things in reality to post on there just to share with people they didn't know. The internet has crushed almost all semblances of socialization. In a way I can't exactly find the words to explain the internet ruined reality and vice versa.
It's a shame. The problem is the people. The more people that like something or get into it, the more it'll be ruined because it has to cater to a larger and larger demographic. Eventually it loses the passion and soul it once had, like the mysterious, limitless possibilities the internet had when we were all stupid kids. Sure nostalgia plays a big part in it but I can't help but feel like things were so much better and less disingenuous back then.
20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s 80s, 90s all of these decades were unique in their own way. Early 00s was also good but like OP said it was updated version of the 90s. 2007 was the final nail in the coffin for the society as we knew it
Without social media, we would have the same problem, but on TV, thanks to reality shows.
'00s: goths, emos, scene kids, Japan kids, "nerds" (yeah, some of these started before 2000, but didn't become popular until in or after that year)
'10s: "nerds", hipsters
it is because technology progressed at a speed of light. 2010 and 2007 is only 3 years difference but look how much shit has changed its like going from 1990 into 2020
