Anyone feel that the 00s were kind of like an "updated" version of the late 90s (i.e. awesome) until 2006-2007ish or so, when the Bieber iPhone social media trash garbage shit charmless era started?

People like to say "muh 9/11" and "muh Iraq War" changed everything. Politically, they most certainly did, but pop culturally? Not really, or at least not immediately. I remember a lot of the late 90s things lasting until 2005, well into Dubya's presidency.

Watch a movie like Mean Girls. Came out in 2004, but it could've just as easily came out in 1998. Then look at something like Hannah Montana: The movie. It was released only 4 years later, but it feels like a totally different universe - a "shinier, more modern" plane of existence.

I feel like the early 00s were sort of their own thing. It was when the internet was starting to go wider which had a large effect.
>>
>>26304440
No. 2000-2007, like the 60s, was a time period with great pop culture that was somewhat overshadowed by the Vietnam War/Iraq war.

2007-now is bieber iPhone shit

I notice that when people on this board say "I miss the early 2000s", they tend to lump 2004-2007ish into that definition, despite those being mid-2000s.

Is "early 2000s" just easier to say than "early-mid 2000s"?

The user-friendliness of the internet was its downfall.

When people refer to the "golden age" of the web, they refer to the time when it was mostly non-normies using it, because normies had no reason to use it. Meanwhile we were all browsing our obscure forums, edgy comedy sites, and playing vidya. The most normies did was send emails or look at online catalogs.

Social media particularly is what started the collapse, it literally reeled the normies in. And soon places like ebaums, youtube, and eventually 4chan reached memetic status and transformed into platforms to generate revenue. People started making vlogs for the sole purpose of generating popularity and money, instead of creating endearing videos they pour their soul into. Memes became forced, they no longer arose naturally as the abstract comedic devices they were meant to be, but rather became warped by the normie masses who were entertained, intrigued, but did not fully understand. Our sacred spaces were desecrated, and we've descended into a whirlwind of post-irony and nihilism.

I really miss the days where it was just forums/messengers, and there was an unspoken rule that you do not put yourself out there to be seen by anyone. You would actually take the time to get to know someone before revealing any form of personal information, but mostly you would just know people on an alias basis.

Now I can look into any faggots life and it's all there to see neatly on a web page that they had done themselves. This is where all the SJW nonsense has come from, with all their victim hood. They simply cannot distinguish between real life and the internet anymore, so calling them a cunt or even telling them to end themselves is the same to them as if you would have walked up to them and said it to their face while being physically imposing.

Amazing how times have changed.

people taking so many photos of themselves/their friends = they think they're cool i.e. have such a high opinion of themselves that they think that many people want to see what they look like and what they do on a DAILY BASIS.
the fucking ego that these people have blows my mind. i'm completely against censorship of the internet but at this point when i look at how gluttonous and unapologetically narcissistic/ egotistic SO MANY people are, i start to think that maybe it would be a good thing if we limited this shit. the human population just can't help themselves, they're animals.
>>
>>26307093
>unapologetically narcissistic/ egotistic SO MANY people are

Just imagine. A lot of people where already egoistic before, with parents telling them that they're special and so on. Now, add a sprinkle dose of facebook likes giving them validation, and you get extremely narcissistic people.

The worse part, in order to even feel more "important", they try to act unique but they end up acting and thinking as the same as other people. It's fucking horrible. People share photos not for fun, but for likes. People share jokes/memes not for fun, but for likes. And the absolute worst of all: People CREATE content not because they have a true passion in it, but just for likes.

It ruins all the fun.

I agree with this, once the economic crash hit the culture went to shit alongside it.
And the warped culture warped everything else and also gave rise to all the social media and smart phones and such.

9/11, or more accurately the frightened paranoid response to 9/11, did turn a generation of children into a bunch of emotionally fragile young adults.

It was bad when people kept talking about the 90's, but this?

I was 17 during 2005 and I will tell you for a fact 2000-2007 was GOD TIER and everything to come after was SHIT TIER.

Normals ruined the internet. I don't even like using the internet anymore but its all I've got, even with all the awful vanity and fake shit.

shit, i was about to call you underage B& then realized how long ago that was.

i was in my freshmen year of college back in 2008, nobody had any idea what was happening since we were all swept up by Obama's election and college life, it wasnt until people went back home and realized there were no summer jobs to be had or beginning of sophomore year when students didnt come back to study.

Normiephones allowed normals to shit the internet up 24/7 be they at home or in da club.

Now 50% of the internet is nothing but selfies and vanity. The internet used to be our escape from the real world but normals made it into an extension of it instead.

>Back then, people would take pictures for memories and fun.
>Nowadays, the first thing that comes into their mind is a "like" on Facebook or Instashit.

Oh man, this.

I like taking pictures and videos sometimes for memories. But now people, even my family, are hesitant sometimes to take vids because they think I'm gonna post it on some social media page.

I dont know how to explain it... people just think they gotta be perfect for the camera because thousands of people will be seeing the pics/vids, even though I just wanna store them for personal memories.

It wasn't even that long ago that you were encouraged to stay anonymous on the internet and avoid giving your real identity except in certain things, like your business website or something.

Now, people look at you weird if you don't have a FB or whatever.

2000 was still a good year
2001 is when things really started to go downhill (and not just because of 9/11)
>>
>>26304677
It's not just me then. I turned 12 in 2000 and it was the best year of my life. The year after that was when the world started going downhill in my opinion (this may have something to do with me becoming a teenager and hitting puberty in 2001).

So probably it's mostly the appropriation of the nerd culture or whatever you want to call it.

I predict that just in a couple of years, people will be (unironically) nostalgic about the early (or even mid-) 2010s.

Now that I think about it, the late-'00s economic crash was maybe even a bigger factor of things becoming worse.

In the mid to late 00s reality came into the internet with the popularization of social media. Suddenly everyone wanted to exist online and did things in reality to post on there just to share with people they didn't know. The internet has crushed almost all semblances of socialization. In a way I can't exactly find the words to explain the internet ruined reality and vice versa.

It's a shame. The problem is the people. The more people that like something or get into it, the more it'll be ruined because it has to cater to a larger and larger demographic. Eventually it loses the passion and soul it once had, like the mysterious, limitless possibilities the internet had when we were all stupid kids. Sure nostalgia plays a big part in it but I can't help but feel like things were so much better and less disingenuous back then.

20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s 80s, 90s all of these decades were unique in their own way. Early 00s was also good but like OP said it was updated version of the 90s. 2007 was the final nail in the coffin for the society as we knew it
