You should actually start it off as a very successful guy, right? Everything should be great, the most ideal life, but during chapter transitions, give hint that it's actually him dreaming. At the very end it should have him staring at the ceiling after waking up.

By hints given, I meant that he can't read the time and gets ribbed for it, he never reads anything that's placed in front of him, random people "appear" or transform in the middle of everything, sudden changes of scenery, etc.
