They aren't, the problem is that they look too much like men (ie like a default human being) for men's preferences. Makeup's a big part of the problem because it's used specifically to make women look distinct from men. It's there to emphasize feminine traits- long eyelashes, pink cheeks, pink lips, youthful glowing skin etc. It would look ridiculous on a man, he doesn't need to emphasize any facial features to look any more masculine. He can be a bit rough looking and that's either attractively masculine or it's neutral, and that's just his natural face.

Not much you can do about it really, makeup has been such an integral part of women's style throughout history that at this point they just can't compete with each other without it.

Due to the average desperation of guys for sex and the magic of makeup usually. I've seen 5 or 6/10 girls without makeup at home and they look closer to a demon of nurgle.
