To be fair, there are some pretty damn good cartoons out right now - but they're targeted at adults. Shows like Adventure Time, Archer, Steven Universe, Futurama, Bob's Burgers - these are damn good shows that people seem to take for granted because they're not specifically aimed at little kids anymore. But the great thing about most of these shows (maybe excluding Archer) is that they're still quite accessible to many different audiences, which is part of what makes them so enjoyable. You have to be a good writer to write for so many different demographics. In essence, I think they're picking up where the Simpsons left off.

Steven Universe gains a plotline about halfway into Season 2, and actually has one of the more fleshed out and interesting universes of any fantasy/fiction TV show I've seen lately. I think they realized very early on that they had an older audience, and capitalized on that.

As for Adventure Time, it's targeted toward adults and children alike. It really reminds me of playing D&D in the creativity and endlessness of its universe.

Those two shows are my two favorites, so I'm glad you brought them up.

I like the show but I don't like the agenda pushing they do. I can handle the whole same sex couple thing that is Garnet (one of the main characters), but it really pushes it in your face a lot. It begins to feel less like "this is normal, this is acceptable" and it starts to feel like "LOOK AT US, WE'RE PROGRESSIVE, CHECK OUT OUR SHOW, LOOK LGTBBQ PEOPLE, PLEASE SUPPORT US!"

I mean, hell, there was one episode that was dedicated to some mailman being a creepy fucker and the show basically sitting him down and saying "no no no, bad male, women do not like when you try to interact with them!"

Also, the whole "the leader of the Crystal Gems was a PROUD STRONG FAT INDEPENDANT WOMAN that only died because A MAN came around and swooned her!"
The dialogue is very sappy and cheesy most of the time, too. The songs, while nice, feel out of place most of the time.

A lot of things the show does just rub me the wrong way, and I'm sure a lot of that is because the fanbase is so god-awful. That being said, the show has an intriguing story, interesting and varied characters that are all flawed in one way or another (except Pearl, she's my waifu), the artstyle is generally vibrant and well done (the show suffers a lot with proportions on characters), and the pacing is most of the time very appropriate.

It's a good show. It's not season 4/5 of Adventure Time levels of good, but it definitely stands above most others

Also, I felt that most of the plot was about as consistent as it had been previously in seasons 1-3, but less subtle. It was still "expose random important plot points" but the old seasons did it by having something in the background or a small part of the episode instead of the entire episode. If you look back though, most of the stuff is foreshadowed, for example orgalord was foreshadowed earlier in the season, and really early in the show, I think on season 2 marceline's dad mentions how Gunter is the most evil being in ooo or something, and the banana man/croak dream episode basically set up the encounter with orgalord.
I thought finn's dad leaving was fitting for the character.
The "cosmic being" thing was set up a season earlier.
I think in the most recent episode the lich's hand was copied all over the multiverse, so that's an interesting plot point.
Basically I really like how they became less subtle with the story arcs.

we only got hints as to the true fucked up nature of the world and where everything came from. I'm not saying plot and exposition are bad, but in a kids show, subtly showing things is always better than just outright transforming the show into something more "mature"

2003 was definitely god tier for CN.

I think what happened is that the internet took over cable's lunch. Things like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube all took viewers away. So now all CN shows is Teen Titans Go. And the occasional RS, AT and SU.

I think 2003 was the biggest year for cable subscriptions. So in turn networks showed better content.

I dont know whether to feel bad or not, though.. the reason I dont have cable now is because it's too damn expensive. I do like the 24/7 channel model though. But not enough to pay so much for it.

I guess I'm the only seniorfag, that still thinks cartoon network was a cancer that ruined cartoons, kids social lives, and animation quality as a whole. Sure they had some gems over the years, but it wasn't worth the cost.

Before CN, you had a solid 2 hours during weekday afternoons, and weekend mornings. Other than vidya there was no other reason to not be outside. Even vidya at the time forced you out, because online multiplayer, wasn't really a thing. You had to go to a buddies house or an arcade if you wanted to play with him.

Before CN, animation quality was steadily getting better and better. Then CN started a trend of relatively quickly and cheaply produced, highly stylized shows. There were a lot of pro/cons with this, but over all it sped up the process and eventually turned into a quantity over quality situation. It had gotten a little better, now, but for a while it was horrible.
