>>25990448 >I went to get a tire changed everyone looks up then back at their phones. >go to get coffee everyone is glued to their phones. >Go hiking on trails to be alone in nature see people glued to their phones. >Go running on the beach at 5:00 in the morning to watch the beautiful sunrise, everyone is on their phone. The light reflects off their faces. And people say I am antisocial.
>>25991393 exactly. how hard is it for all of you faggots to stop using all that shit if you are supposedly so alone in life anyway? throw your smartphone and your internet connection out the window if you're so fed up with it and get a good ol' nokia phone. whoever really has to call/sms you can still do so. also, i could easily survive with just music and books, that's about all entertainment i really need. technology only enters your life as much as you let it.
Before 2000, if you wanted to be on the Internet, you had to boot up your computer (even laptops had to be turned off at night) and connect to the Internet (unless you were RICH AF and had DSL). People were dedicated to whatever they went through all that effort for. They weren't wasting time. They were making contributions to whatever art or discussion group they were in. Also there wasn't a reliable way to watch video so everybody who used the Internet was guaranteed to be fully literate.
Now you can just whip out your smartphone and fire off useless posts while you're taking a shit. That's where the term shitpost probably comes from.
>everything in the civilized world is tending towards requiring/giving advantages to owners of smartphones >tfw don't even own a phone >tfw don't want to be tied down by the electric jew >tfw no one can understand that I have no one to call, nor do they think it strange or the least bit worrysome that while owning one, literally anyone with a bit of knowledge about phones can track you to the ends of the earth It's scary as fuck, to be honest. >be living in the first world >circa 2013 >senior in high school >obnoxious ringtone goes off in anatomy class >teacher thinks it's coming from me >tells me to hand over my phone >tell her I don't own one >the heads of the entire class turn towards me like the fucking borg, like they kinda suspected that I didnt, but just wanted that confirmation >mfw
Using the internet used to be difficult so stupid people didn't use it. It's not that life was better back then, it's that the online community was composed of college students and graybeards almost exclusively. And well-educated people who had the time and money to sit at a chunky desktop setup. It wasn't better, just different. It can never go back to that.
It's just that, you know, see >>25990627 For fucks sake nowadays people can't live without uploading le selfie to instagram/snapchat twice an hour, you can try to argue as much as you want, you can't deny life was ACTUALLY better before the smartphone era.
I literally have nothing against Internet and social networks. The thing is, it's available everyfuckingwhere now, and people spend all their free time on this shit now. Shit is depressing when I look around in the streets or whatever.
>whenever a new animu is released, it takes 1-2 weeks for a fansub to come out >whenever a new game is released, it takes ages to find on warez >finally find what you are looking for on an irc bot, queue, takes hours until your turn, start receiving, bot dies in the middle of send
I feel the same way when I see boomers on facebook talking about "muh childhood was great bcuz we only had our cousins as friends and played with old tractor tires" but they legitimately feel nostalgic for that. This site is old and the majority of users are going to feel nostalgic about early Internet. Go to Twitter if you want to be around people who aren't old enough to feel nostalgic about things (or at least overlook these threads and save yourself some frustration).
>>25991731 >Basically everything else has made improvements.
We have way less privacy now, college degrees are nearly worthless, job security is increasingly rare, social media has enabled psyops, slut culture and slacktivism like never before, and Western nations are being overrun with Third Worlders. But it's all okay, because we have phones and Tinder.
>>25991708 >muh sekrit club Yeah, elitism and selectivity are necessary because most people are garbage. It's a happy circumstance when merit and availability of resources somewhat converge and that was the case with the early Internet and BBSes
If you wanted to be on the Internet, you had to make an effort to be on the Internet. That made a huge difference.
>>25992011 >We have way less privacy now Why, because the NSA? That was always there
>college degrees are nearly worthless As they were in the 2000s.
But you phrase that like it's supposed to be bad. The job market is just changing.
>job security is increasingly rare Previous point. You want to make an omelet you need to break a few eggs.
>slut culture So people are having more sex, abloo abloo bloo
>Western nations are being overrun with Third Worlders. The muslim population has gone up by about 3%, sure. These people aren't causing trouble, they usually do better for the country than the people that were born and raised there.
>>25992011 >less privacy this isn't because of le smartphones and le social media. This is due to 9/11.
>college degrees have always been worthless. just nowadays, the information that was previously locked behind a paywall is literally available for free if you're willing to torrent (bar of course being a lawyer, doctor, engineer). why would i hire some real estate faggot with 10+ degrees or even an electrician when I could look up the information on google or bittorrent it? lmfao retard
>job security never was a thing. we had enough jobs for the amount of people way back when, but the population is not exactly the same. some people have got to go.
>slut culture sluts have been a thing since time immemorable, retard. stop fantasizing.
>slacktivism wow some retards think retweeting is going to change anything in the real world! the world is 100x worse!!!!
>western nations being overrun overrun? LOL enjoy that 1% increase to your population, white boy. the one that YOU permitted.
>>25991475 I'm also 1997 and I agree with these people in that the internet was better before smartphones/tablets and before social media was ubiquitous. 2010 for me is the turning point when these two factors kicked in big time. Before that, there was social media but it wasn't EVERYWHERE and people weren't constantly connected like they are now. People would log on to Facebook/MySpace at a desktop/laptop and browse in one setting rather than having their interactions dripfed to them constantly throughout the day like people have today with 4G and Wi-Fi everywhere. Smartphones for me became widespread in 2010. Even in as recent at 2008, people were still using bar phones and flip phones with basic operating systems designed by the phone's manufacturer. Maybe it's just nostalgia that the internet seemed more wholesome before I was 12 but I definitely think it was a better experience before everything was centralised onto social media. I miss when it was about discussing interests on forums instead of being constantly connected to IRL friends on Facebook and Twitter. If I feel that way about the internet in the 2000s then I can imagine how some of these people miss Web 1.0 and Usenet.
>>25991789 >study game design >realize life is a game >realize that having everything on cheatmode all the time isn't good design >realize that having only 60 minutes on a BBS every day or having to wait for things actually made them more valuable
You are literally just trying to be a counter culture faggot hating on the latest perceived "normie trend"
>but muh smartphones cause people to be antisocial >but everyone is so vain now!! >but life used to be better!
If having no smartphones was better then people wouldn't use then you retard. Information is the most important resource humans crave and integration with technology is just going to increase as it becomes easier to use the internet all the time. I mean do you think this smartphone usage is somehow exclusive to people living in 2016? If you went back 2000 years and told people they could have a device which fits in their hand THAT LITERALLY CONTAINS ALL OF THE INFORMATION IN THE WORLD AND LETS YOU CONNECT WITH ANYONE ANYWHERE they would also be glued to their devices 24/7, probably even more than we do
The only people who don't like this are old fogeys and retarded edgelords like OP who can't stand to have an opinion that normies share
>>25992150 >Why, because the NSA? That was always there Not to the extent that it is now.
>The job market is just changing. Yes, just like it changed in the 1930s.
>So people are having more sex, abloo abloo bloo Yes, and dysfunctional families, dysfunctional relationships and single mothers raising more dysfunctional individuals are becoming the norm because of it.
>The muslim population has gone up by about 3%, sure. These people aren't causing trouble, they usually do better for the country than the people that were born and raised there.
>>25992322 Not the person you're replying to. Bro.
>>25992197 Smartphones and social media have given them a massive foothold for datamining and spying.
>college degrees have always been worthless No, they weren't, because at one point a degree was rare. Now, everyone has one.
>job security never was a thing Right, the job market was just as bad in the 50s.
>psyops Remember that stupid dress that got plastered onto every corner of the Internet around a year ago? Remember how it happened out of nowhere?
>sluts have been a thing since time immemorable, retard You're already resorting to insults, then. That doesn't usually happen until later, but if you insist, you stupid faggot. Slut culture was once massively shamed and ridiculed. They existed, but they were ostracized, not celebrated.
>LOL enjoy that 1% increase to your population, white boy. the one that YOU permitted.
Way to project, Ahmed. I'm not even white and I didn't permit shit.
I'm 29 and have never owned a smart phone. I signed up for some free government phone service and haven't paid for basic cell service in years. Unlimited text and minutes. It's easier than you fags make it out to be.
>>25992578 Zuckerburg and co have explicitly said that they want anonymity on the Internet to "go away."
Facebook is rolling out Internet infrastructure in developing countries and shunting traffic to exclusively to their chosen partners as "free access." https://info.internet.org/en/story/free-basics-from-internet-org/
So, Facebook is trying to control and destroy the Internet, basically.
>>25993660 It's funny that. If you asked people in like 2001 if they were willing to upload their photo albums onto the internet for the world to see they balk at the idea. Yet in like 10 years, they have been conditioned to do exactly that in order to feel in the loop.
