These areas aren't bad and mostly filling up with other young white people these days. Then you just get an unlimited monthly metro card to take you to wherever you can find work.

Working minimum wage is pretty shit and will make you want to kill yourself. But if you are reasonably attractive, moderately well-spoken, and can fake being friendly in a retail environment, then it's easy enough to get convention/trade show work.

The Jacob Javits center always has conventions/shows going on and the individual booths that attend these shows are always looking for local people to staff them. If you can stand on your feet and smile for 8+ hours a day, you can get ~$15/hr tax-free cash at the end of the show.
