Usually I'd make this one sided against communists, but let me include fascists too. Ten years ago antisemism and anti-monarchism were just the standard beliefs for original revolutionaries who got tossed out of the majority and ultimately identified with synchronized train of thought, now it seems to be the go-to political party.

I think what upsets me is that I have genuinely nerdy friends who'll ask me why I'm not binge watching the Flash, or going to anime con this or that, and all I really can't tell them that I'm not one of those guys who could do that and not die alone. Pretend for a moment it's the 60's and you are someone who genuinely enjoys eastern culture and religion. This makes you more than a bit of a geek and in a massively christian dominated society an outcast. Then the 70's hits and everything has gone full "Age of Aquarius" and people are growing their hair out and becoming vegetarians, using meditation for humble-braging, and picking up chicks at yoga classes. This all pisses off their WASPy parents to no end and generally earns them widespread social scorn, but lots of pussy. What we have then is "outgroup" signaling, the phenomena that gives a subculture it's identity and what makes them prime targets for getting turned into a new "rebellious" fashion statement.

If it was simply people liking the look it wouldn't be so much of a problem, but that "rebellion" factor is where the real problems start. It doesn't matter if you're rebelling if you never where part of an in-group to begin with, outcasts aren't rebels, they're just outcast weirdo freaks. To be a "rebel" and get the associated social benefits of that title you have to both signal ingroup status and outgroup status, it has to be obvious what you're rebelling against.

This conveniently also pisses off the outgroup you're stealing from helping to keep them away from your new "rebel" circle and not get bogged down with the negative things associated with them. So what does the outgroup do? Outgroup signal harder. Become even more outcast from mainstream culture. Power level hiding gets dropped and things get ugly. Porn seems to be a popular tool for this and if you look closely you can see how this has shaped contemporary geek culture.

Eventually the fad will die, the "rebels" get absorbed back into the ingroup, and things slowly almost go back to how they used to be, like a house after being hit by a hurricane. Outgroup signaling becomes less aggressive. The outgroup itself becomes less outcast through contact with the mainstream. That's my prediction.

Young people these days are always looking for an identity to adopt an: will go anywhere for it.

The fact that you are upset about nerdiness becoming cool is just a sign that you also treat being a nerd as an identity.

People in the old days didn't really care about being a nerd or being cool.
They had their interests and that was that. It could ne niche or popular, it didn't matter.

But in this identity driven culture, people latch on to interest based on how niche they are. Or people will feel threatened when their niche interest becomes popular.

What I'm trying to say is that as a blackanon, the nerd thing is not cute, ever. Any of your black friends will tell you that the black community enforces homogeny a lot harder than whites. punishment for outgroup behavior growing up was violence, plain and simple. I hated seeing it happen, but the lesson was loud and clear.

White people are decidely less harsh when they enforce othering, but they do it on a level too subtle for me. I just find it hypocritical to adapt the veneer of a subculture while abhoring the people who created it.

But I would never signal harder there. If being a nerd is just gonna be walking a tightrope between "cool nerd" and "creepy loser", I would rather fold my cards and lift weights than dive headfirst into it and try to outnerd people in a futile attempt to look geniune (see: >>25860591 's story).

The reason people signal is to find others of the same group. In all the noise the newcomers create in a culture the original outcasts find it harder to find other outcasts to band with for defense, so they have to shout "I'M A FUCKING NERD" to get heard over all the people going "nerd nerd nerd, this is nerd stuff, notice the nerd things I say and do".

Ingroup signaling is just to reassure other members of the group you belong. Give the right secret handshake and we'll let you into the old boys club. I'm sure you can think of tons of examples of this. Because in-group signaling is so common and quiet normally you can use very subtle outgroup signaling to find others. the two scenarios where this is broken is in trends and... online. After all, anyone can just be faking it online for a laugh, so you need a very loud signal to find the other outcasts. That's where you get the really horrifying cringe-worthy shit you see all over 4chan. Funnily no one ever needs to explicitly respond to this signal for it to serve it's purpose, just being able to reinforce ones identity in a community can be fulfilling enough for some. Just as long as they aren't punished for it that's all the confirmation they need.

I really hate how everyone of these nerds seems to be trying to wear the biggest black rimmed glasses they can find when ironically these sort of pricks were the ones who would be bullying people who actually needed glasses.

All those social outcasts and nerds got rich when computers took off in the 90's, it's not a coincidence that the "lol im such a nerd" shit started in earnest when Apple and Google became juggernauts and the entire economy became much more tech oriented. People also saw that the dudes that started this shit were all pretty intelligent, at least when it came to numbers, so they want to co-opt the image so they can associate themselves more with perceived intelligence. People wanting to identify more with the outcast underdog than the hindmind popular establishment for their internal narrative also heavily plays into it.
