I lived in Japan for 2 years teaching English to children. Japan is a cool place to visit, pretty awful for living there. Most people don't speak even simple English, people look at you like a zoo animal; even people white people who speak Japanese are not treated as equals by coworkers. The work culture is insane if you are not use to it. The weather is very gloomy in the winter. The orderly and quite nature of Japanese people gets really annoying after awhile, basically Japan gets very boring very quick.

Those are just a few simple reasons I didn't like it there, I could talk for hours in detail about why it sucked. I live in Vietnam now and its much better here, I enjoy it a lot.

The company I work for has a partnership with NEC, and I have 2 to 3 business trips per year, to Japan.

I always pretend that I know minimal Japanese, so I always get to hear everyone talking about me behind my back. They see us as subhumans, in all honesty. The times when we go out to drink to "bond" are just opportunities for them to drill me with questions and attempt to get some dirt on me. Japanese code monkeys and salarymen are absolute masters in manipulation. Once you leave the large cities and starting hitting the outskirts, you get treated even worse. OK. I've read this thread, and I'm kind of pissed off. I'm planning to go work in Japan this fall, and trying not to be the idiotic anime-obsessed foreigner.

Plenty of people in this thread have posted about their work experiences here. I would like to believe it is better than what some of these posters say. Nothing anyone has said really invalidates what anyone else said (telling me I will only encounter racism if I go to find a place to live is not saying racism is insignificant there when I will be looking for a place to live!).

I had to go see her once because I wanted to learn Arabic, but it clashed with a current lecture, so I changed it to something else, and she was just very robotic. According to my friend who studied Japanese, she once put a picture of her brother up on a powerpoint slide and was like "This is my brother, here's his number if anyone wants to ask him out" which sounds weird as fuck to me.

I also occasionally try to give a polite smile when I see her and she looks straight ahead with a dead expression without making eye contact all.
