Group dynamics. Perhaps he got into an argument with one person and that person started making fun of him. A second observer sees this and quickly judges both of these people. He will side with the stronger party of what is essentially a pecking order. A third person also ( subconsciously ) registers this and sides with the larger dominant group. Quickly the whole room will take ( subconsciously ) side of the stronger person while isolating the other person in fear of being associated with him or her.
