I am a different anon, but I live in Huntsville, AL. Boeing, SAIC, Northrop Grunman, and all kinds of contractors out on Redstone Arsenal out here. It's a decent area for Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical. I'm a software engineer living in the area but I work for a company in California. I wouldn't say this place is amazing for programmers, but it's decent.

I've seen work out of Robins AFB near Atlanta as well. If you ever get in on the military contractor gig you will have a lot of choices for where to work and where to live as an engineer.
