Because it showed me what people genuinely think of me. I had entire monologues in that story that I wrote for myself, months before the idea for the piece even popped into my head. These were my real thoughts and my real feelings (literally inane ramblings about my life I would jot down into a notepad file at three in the morning, touched-up slightly to fit) coming through the mouth of a fictional character, and people found him disgusting as a result. It was, no kidding, the most unbiased opinion of myself I could have gotten, since nobody knew I had based this pathetic character on myself, and so they weren't trying to spare my feelings. Fucking eye-opening, that was.
