Haven't heard of an experiment, but I'm familiar with the concept. Men and women supposedly can never have a platonic friendship because of underlying sexual tension/desires. Just from my experience, this tends to decrease as people age and have more experience in relationships.

Attention whoring/rate me threads were becoming so prevalent, that pretty much 1/3 of the threads were /soc/ shit, 1/3 were threads complaining about those threads, and 1/3 were other shit. Shit was so bad /soc/ got created.

I wouldn't say it's nearly as bad as it was then though. As I said, probably around 1/3 of the threads were attention whoring, maybe even more, I'm feeling pretty generous with that estimate. I guess "robots only post pics" threads are still posted. Dick threads are attention whoring in a way too, in fact, pretty much any thread about appearance (weak jaw/chin, cut vs uncut, height) is attention whoring, even if people aren't posting pics. However, I believe most of these threads are started due to feelings of insecurity, just like the original rate me threads; posters hoped that people would tell them they're "good enough" or how they can improve whatever aspect of their appearance. I'd say rate me threads on /r9k/ and /soc/ are different in that the former are based on feelings of insecurity while the latter are based on feelings of confidence. Of course, there are exceptions. 4chan's a dynamic place.

Rate Me threads occur sporadically nowadays. Sometimes we'll have several a day for several days in a row then nothing for a notable amount of time. And robots aren't the ones posting in them. Sure there are some but a bare handful and everyone else is a fucking normalfag. There's even some camwhore who posts threads about herself and posts a picture of herself with nearly every reply.
