I'm not serious about religion, I go more out of a cultural/class thing. There's a good book called Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways and the Shaping of America, or something like that. The Anglican/Episcopal Church was a big center of Tidewater gentry life, but it was mostly devotional. Real religiosity was something you found more in the Puritans, or the Scot-Irish in the borderlands of Tennessee.
