There is no key answer, but you have to base it on the context of your specific life. If you aren't in schooling or any other situation where you naturally interact with a decent amount of people regularly, you have to go out of your way somehow. Whether it be a bar/club, dating apps, some form of club or community, etc. You HAVE to go out into an environment where you will meet people. No one will just magically see you at the store or the movie theater and instantly want to meet and date you. There's like a 0.5% chance of that ever happening.

Dating apps/ sites help sort of remove that part of the game because it connects you with the intention of dating anyways, so at that point you either have to be attractive or interesting while maintaining a level of 'normalcy'. You won't always have to settle for fatties, but don't expect to just start banging all the young hotties immediately if you aren't hot or witty (actually witty, not black twitter pickup line cheesy bullshit). That being said, when dealing with setting up dates or trying to feel out when to make a move for a date, you have to do it soon. Seriously most people expect you to engage in it quickly.
