When they escort you out of your cell they chain your hands are feet and blindfold you and cover your ears so you have no idea about how the inside layout of the prison is. You are never going to see any prisoner or hear them because everything is soundproofed to prevent the from communicating by yelling or tapping the walls.

If you just want to punish people in an economical way and don't give a shit if it completely fucks up their lives or how likely they are to end up back there after being released then the murrican system is great. They do a really good job at running these kinds of prisons in Arizona. Here in Europe we actually think beyond the point at which they get out and prefer to use the time they're stuck in prison to make sure they won't end up back there after being released.

Once you go to prison (for any length of time) in America, your life is basically over.

It's easier to find work that isn't just bottom feeder stuff even if you have been in prison, in a lot of places at least. It leads to a lower recidivism rate, which in turn means you're spending less money on prisons. We also don't have private prisons here, so there's not really an incentive to make money.
