It has nothing to do with courage - Chad naturally talks to her, the notion he would have to draw on reserves of courage to approach a female is completely alien to him.
Anyway - she was just making polite small talk. She isn't interested in you, she's just being nice because it's part of her job to make you feel welcome and comfortable and happy to spend money in the store.

Essentially, she'd be going out of her way to engage you in more than shallow conversation.
