I just caught my mum watching one of those British TV shows where smug boomers tour around the Spanish countryside looking for villas to buy

She started crying, asked where my apathy had come from, and locked herself in her bedroom.
I think she resents the fact that I actually enjoy being a no-strings-attached wagie because now even that isn't good enough for her and she wants me to find something more serious. She even said to me the other day that I "live in the moment" too much. What? Isn't that the ultimate pearl of normie wisdom?

I think I'll start with the irreconcilably expensive housing in my city (Melbourne) making it pretty much impossible to get a foot in the door

Homestly it isn't even just boomers, anyone over 40 does not understand that the world we are trying to get started in in miles apart from the world they got started in. My mom got a paid internship where she literally stereotypically just got coffees and helped with minor tasks in the early 90s. Today my friend has an unpaid internship for the last 2 yeads where they required he had his degree first, they regularly make him utilize it for free and if he refuses unless he is paid (other interns have done this in front of him), his employer just cuts them lose and laughs. Not to mention my mom's internship turned into a better paying job in 6 months, and my friend is still waiting.
Don't even get me started on the fact that blue collar jobs like trades that actually pay well are disappearing and the ones that are left require you to know someone at the company before they even look at your resume.

I want to join the Air Force, it will be good for me and I need new friends and a new experience and a new job.
But I want to make sure I do something worthwhile and that I can transfer to a civillian career as well. A friend of mine used to be a technician for the planes and now works at an airport fixing regular planes which sounds interesting, but I was wondering what the air traffic control was like?
