I'm a complete and utter social failure and I don't find small talk to be that bad. Most small talk is started by some banal shit or minor inconvenience and branches from there. You don't start conversations with very specific topics in mind so that you won't have anything to fall back on and risk asking another stupid question. People who can socialize normally take it for granted and never have to pay attention to how much nuance there is.
