So I'm currently visiting some family in my home country (Dominican Republic) and because of circumstances I was forced to shower with my dad. My boyfriend is a business owner and mechanic. I don't see why he thinks so highly with her. Whenever I talk with her it's super awkward because she's so quiet and panics so easily. It's like she's been sheltered all her life and hasn't learned to socialize properly. They've been friends for over 10 years, but I just don't see why he would befriend her. My boyfriend is confident and self-sustaining. She's super dependent on others and can barely go through a day without screwing something up. She has no interesting hobbies and is visibly uncomfortable whenever she has to hang out with anyone that isn't my boyfriend. When I see them alone together she's super relaxed and happy then when I get close she goes back to being super frigid.
I honestly think he only visits her every few months because he's worried that she will start cutting herself again or something. We have a family together and live on our own. He doesn't call or text her often. Every once in awhile he'll go see her , sometimes with me, but mostly by himself and only for a few hours.

We want to talk about OUR problems and OUR interests and feel like WE'RE interesting and loved by others. We want them to be there for us, not the other way round and any instance in which we happen to serve someone else's interests is merely a happy side-effect of that constant pursuit of self-validation.
The Good Samaritan does not help the man collapsed in the desert out of a genuine concern for the man's safety. That's only secondary. He helps the man because he has been taught that helping others is what a good person would do, and he wants to go on seeing himself as a good person.
We're all just selfish, lonely souls desperately grasping at one another in the hopes of finding purchase, using them to pull ourselves up and then cutting ties the moment the other person is lower than us.
