You are Allen Starwind, a starship captain and veteran of the Great Interstellar War. Your starship is old, yet (mostly) reliable, and you must take on jobs in order to bring in enough cash to keep it flying. Last time, you witnessed Virgo put an end to Orion, broke a rib or two, explored the local town, and picked up some jobs. Good luck, and fair skies.

You sit on the couch in your cabin, scrolling through the features on your communicator. Looking over, you smile a little bit at Tripe, who sleeps happily in the corner of the room.

Pulling up the call function, you type in the number of the security job offer. The phone rings for maybe two seconds before you hear the click of someone answering. However, on the other line is nothing but silence. Finally you hear something on the other end.

“Yeah?” A voice crackles over the line, modulated to obscure the other person’s identity. You can’t tell whether it is a man or woman, how old they might be, or any other distinguishing features.

“Is… Is this the bodyguard job offer?” You frown as you speak.

There is a solid thirty seconds of silence. “Yeah, I’m the client.” The mystery person speaks with urgency, and even though a modulator is making their voice, you can tell that they are speaking in a worried tone. “You’re a bodyguard?”

“I can handle myself around a gun.”

The voice hums stressfully on the other end. “What kind of qualifications do you have?”

You grumble. “I was in the Federal Navy, and I’ve got plenty of experience in dangerous locales.” You shift on the couch, rubbing the back of your neck. “My second in command is also skilled with weapons and tactics.”

“Second in command?” The voice seems startled with this revelation. “You’re military?”

“No,” you reply simply. “I captain a merchant starship.”

“Oh,” the voice says with apparent relief. “Unfortunately, I only have one position open… You’d have to choose whether you send your first officer, or if you do the job yourself.”

You are Lieutenant Richter Von Tracht, an armor officer of the army of the Archduchy of Strossvald, and you are on your way to what could be your first combat deployment.

It was, to be frank, a welcome change from the nonsense that happened during your short time in what was purported to be garrison duty. At the very least, should Valsten, the country to the south whose border you were headed to by train, decide to raise some hell, they wouldn’t be doing it with soul eating monsters or annoying masked wizards.

You had been explaining the recent war history of Valsten to Maddalyn, your arranged fiancée and resident expert in the bizarre and supernatural. She had been bored, so you had decided to share the contents of your briefing papers with her. Being blind in a manner that made it impossible for her to read printed text, it wasn’t as if she could read them herself.

Maddalyn had promptly observed certain aspects of Strossvald’s military history that had uncomfortable implications.

You were no expert in politics, but you knew plenty enough to know when you weren’t supposed to be talking about something.

“The walls have ears, Maddy,” you hold up a hand and gesture to the thin wooden door to the compartment on the train that you shared, “Don’t make me a widower before we’re even married.”

Maddalyn frowned and looked back out the window. It was open for her sake; she couldn’t see through glass, for reasons you ill understood, but the noise from the rattling tracks outside wasn’t such that you needed to raise your voices.

“I thought you didn’t really care about such things,” she said, “You’re so inquisitive about threats to the state, yet when it comes to questioning the same state you dutifully look away.”

“What could be done about it anyways?” you ask defensively, “All we can hope for is that we come out on the other side with as few nicks and scratches as possible. That’s certain not to happen if you think about such things too hard.”

“I don’t know,” Maddalyn half closed her eyes, “Something. Plenty of other people had to have noticed it. What happens when enough countries outside of us decide to do something about it?”

“I refer to my earlier statement.” You said.

“Richter, you must have figured out by now,” the hollow, strange echo of Poltergeist’s voice floated in the window. Maddalyn recoiled and fell backwards as his face rose up and looked into the window. The shrouded soulbinder propped his masked chin on two hands, resting his elbows on the rim of the window, with his cloak billowing in the wind. “The young lady doesn’t think such passivity is very sexy.”

“Couldn’t you have come in through the door like a normal person?” you ask baldly. While most would be shocked to find a masked wizard clinging to the window of a moving train and intruding upon their conversations, this was far from the most bizarre way Poltergeist had chosen to approach you.

“I have no need to be restricted by such normality,” Poltergeist said haughtily, his odd voice unusually clear over all other sounds, “I came to tell you that, tragically, I cannot accompany you on your journey to the Varbonnlands.”

“How do you know that?” Maddalyn demanded, “How do you know where we’re going?”

“I am sad to say that that will be yet another question you ask of me that will never be answered,” Poltergeist waved a heavy, gloved finger, “I will tell you why I am not going, however. To put it shortly, there are far too many restless soul fragments. If I were to set foot there for long, the results would be far from pleasant.”

You wake up in a dark and cramped room. Groggy and confused, you try to stand up and realize that this room is, in fact, a coffin. You push upwards and leave it. After some surveying, you can see that you are on some sort of large, rocky, platform with runes surrounding you in a circle. The corpse of a man dressed in robes lies before you, with an arrow coming out of his head. As you kneel to inspect, you notice that your body is made entirely out of bones; you're a skeleton!

With a forest surrounding you and nowhere to go, what do you do now?

Remove the corpse's robes and tear them into strips that can be used as ropes. Detach your own humerus, and secure it to the front of the pelvis using the strips of robe to create a makeshift skeledick. Fuck the corpse.

“Everything dies.” – Ancient saying, origin unknown.

The Aurora has some pretty good medical facilities on board, a fact that you're damn grateful for. After everything that you've been through, it's nice to lie back in a hospital bed and float in a haze of laudanum.

Jagoda stops by a few times a day, giving you updates about the Aurora and her crew, or just spending some time on idle chatter. Once, she brings the Aurora's captain to meet you, a taciturn man named Taziker who offers the barest minimum of conversation before leaving. From what Jagoda mentions afterwards, it's about as much as she expected from the captain – the simple fact that he emerged from his private quarters was a sign of his respect.

Other than that, your fellow Wolf has a limitless supply of vulgar jokes to share with you, humour that drips with all manner of filth. You try and laugh along with them, but your heart isn't in it. You sense that Jagoda isn't just telling them for her own good, either – she tries not to show it but the encounter with the beast, like nothing either of you had ever really seen before, has left her shaken. Vulgar jokes, it seems, are her escape.

You have your own ways of avoiding the issue, even if that means focusing on an entirely different conundrum. Your thoughts keep returning to Nihilo, and the strangely lifeless feel it had to it. You've tried to go their under your own power, thinking hard about that abyss whenever you doze, but it never works.

It seems that you're stuck here, stranded in the real world until something changes.

Less than a day out from Port Steyr, and the Aurora is brought to an ominous stop. You're left to ponder the situation for a few hours, weighing up the merits of leaving your comfortable hospital bed in search of answers, but then Vas arrives and spares you the trouble. He looks more frustrated than troubled, which is a faint comfort – not a disaster, then, but a fresh hurdle. You can deal with hurdles.

“The good news first,” he begins, although he doesn't look like a man with a lot of good news to share, “The Ghoul is looking better now. She'll sail again in due time, although she won't be going anywhere for a while. The bad news is... Captain Taziker radioed in our situation. We were exposed to an unknown being, he said, and that means...”

Wait, you interrupt, you can guess. That means quarantine, right?

“Seems like we'll be enjoying the Ministry's hospitality for a few days,” Vas scowls, “I'll not lie to you, Henryk, this is the last bloody thing I need right now. With what we're carrying...”

The Ministry could be a problem, you agree, but it's too early to jump to any risky conclusions – scurrying about and acting suspicious might end up being more trouble than it's worth. You'll handle the Ministry, you tell him with a level glance, it won't be the first time you've slipped a few dubious items through quarantine.

Vas raises an eyebrow at that, but otherwise makes no comment.

-

Shaking off your aches and pains, leaving the hospital bed behind, you trudge up on deck to meet the arriving Ministry guards. Better that you're there to get the first word in, you figure, and see exactly how long you'll be held up. From your position on the deck, you have a fine view of the Ministry ship approaching alongside the Aurora. The order goes up for a ladder to be dropped, and soon uniformed soldiers are climbing aboard.

Camilla is nowhere to be seen. That might make things a little more difficult.

“Don't think we've got anything to worry about,” Jagoda boasts, emerging to stand beside you, “None of the men have shown any disease problems, not one.”

Not one, you repeat, that sounds... unusual.

“Aye,” Jagoda nods, a trace of her earlier uncertainty returning, “But I figure that wasn't your usual beast we ran into. Maybe the whole damn thing was toxic – killed any contagion that got near it. That's my theory, at least... but I sure ain't gonna tell them that. I'm just a Hunter, let them do the thinking.” Pausing only to slap you on the shoulder, Jagoda swaggers off and leaves you to face the Ministry soldiers alone.

Thanks, you mutter as she departs, you'll handle the rest of this.
>>
>>1250708

What you first notice about the Ministry soldiers that board the Aurora is that they are few in number, far too few to police any kind of quarantine if the crew resisted. They look harried as well, barely prepared for the task at hand. All in all, the impression you get is of something thrown together at the last minute, using whatever resources were at hand. A little bit of disorganisation is fine with you, if it makes them sloppy.

The leader of the Ministry detachment soon gravitates towards you, studying you for a moment from behind their pristine white cloth mask. A woman, with puffy features and unimaginative eyes, she doesn't look like much. The sort of person to follow their orders to the letter, you suspect, and not an inch further.

“I know you,” she says at last, a flat and slightly nasal voice, “Borghild speaks highly of you. Good to see someone reliable on board. I'm Lorrel, I'm here to enforce the quarantine, although...”

Although?

Lorrel narrows her eyes slightly, lowering her voice to match. “Although we're not really looking for any disease. We have no reason to suspect that the ship might be contaminated. We're going to hold you here for a single day, just as a formality,” beneath the mask, her mouth twists into an unhappy frown, “And for... other reasons. It doesn't matter – you'll confirm that there's no disease on board?”

You are Irue Valen, blood heir to House Valen, and currently riding horseback through a familiar forest which had never seemed so strange in an effort to find your missing Testament. You spent a great deal of time searching for missing Testaments, and you had kind of hoped that phase of your life was going to be over soon.

"You want to know more about the Shrine's teachings?" You could barely make out Eleanore's voice over your shoulder, her arms wrapped reluctantly around your waist as she took up the rearmost seat on the horse; A fact which had led you to tightening your grip on Tim in turn simply out of fear that you'd both go flying off if something agitated the stupid beast.

If Tim was inconvenienced by becoming the anchor to a small chain of deathgrips, he was being considerate enough to not bring it up.

That aside, her presence kept your hair tucked safely out of the wind, which made the ride far less infuriating than your last one had been. "I'm not sure where I would start. Is there something you're curious about?" It was also a decent way for you to pass the time in order to clear up some of the curiosities you had amassed since waking up in this false world. Eleanore had let slip several times a heartfelt belief in tenets of the Shrine you had simply taken for granted through out your life, but given the determination she had shown, you somehow got the feeling they hadn't always been like that.

They were deviances from the norm and what you knew. Not unlike the fact that she was the representative for an eight Mana that you had gone your entire life not even knowing existed... Despite, apparently, having lived directly next to a place brimming with its presence. While you were primarily here in order to retrieve Ari, you doubted you'd be getting out of here without a fight unless you could piece together what the meaning of this false world even was.

It was shameful how long it took you to realize just what kind of place you had stumbled into, but there wasn't much of an option for you now but to try and navigate it without inadvertently drawing the ire of its Guardian... Or worse.

So I mentioned I'd have a question for everyone!

There've occasionally been some mentions of how people wished Valen used /qst/'s abysmal speed to stretch out its update windows to allow for more thought or discussion between its four players. As I've been running it, this would probably slow down progress to an unforgivable degree...

...However, if I abandoned the notion of running a "session" altogether, it may be possible. The details specifically being that I would start a thread, and then write 2-4 updates a day (or whenever I had the time), allowing for essentially multiple hours of consideration and discussion between them. This would make Valen a very slow burn type of experience, as opposed to where it just starts and then runs for 10-13 hours once a week. It would also help curb some of the recent problems where I've had to cancel for an entire week just because my one designated day of concentrated free time got unexpectedly occupied.

On the other hand, I feel hesitant to try something like that. Primarily because I don't feel like this quest really warrants windows that long, and empirically speaking, we've never really had a playerbase that talks amongst yourselves a whole lot outside of extremely rare occasions. changing from a dedicated session to an update block seems like it would mess with the momentum between updates, as well as make Forgettings less generally pressing. Then there's the issue of archiving it accurately (figuring out when during the week to archive it, what description to put on it, etc.)

Overall I'm not opposed to trying it if you're interested, if only to see how it goes, but the change would primarily be done to facilitate allowing more participation and consideration in choices at the expense of momentum and designated schedules... And I kind of doubt we'd actually see any significant uptick in participation or discussion even with the change, so it feels like it'd be inefficient to me.

All the same, I'll have a poll for it up on the twitter for the next 7 days or so.

I figure it's worth trying the more drawn out format at least. I suspect part of the reason there isn't much discussion is that there aren't enough people awake at at a time to meaningfully discuss anything. And if it doesn't work out, you can always revert to the current format.

"Police! Nobody move!"

Instinctively people begin to run, breaking windows and vanishing into back rooms. The Scyth point man fires a taser net on a nearby group of concert goers, bringing four of them down in one spazzing heap. They've barely hit the ground before more Scyths begin to flood the room.

Mina and Dennis have already leaped out of the booth and are scrambling to get out of a window although they're impeded by numerous others with the same idea. Deng Li began running for the back of the bar but has been knocked over by others and is barely able to avoid being trampled.

You are the wealthy scion of a business magnate. On your person you have a small vial of illegal cocaine for special occasions, your MedCorp ID, a Patek Phillipe wrist watch, and $200. You are also a disgusting mutant.

He kept his head low as his former future peers and current superiors looked upon him with disdainful glares and pity as he walked his way through the far too clean streets of a recreation type of town that had as far as they knew simply ceased to exist. It was pristine and clean, but fake. As was the boy's expression, though outwardly he showed a strong, solemn expression, accepting his punishment and new path in life with little fuss inside he was terrified, his mechanical heart beat to the point over heating. There was a demon in his shadow, one that could easily destroy him and all he held dear. He had no idea why it was here, but....he had given his soul to save his own life from the monsters that traveled with her. A single drop of sweat rolled down his brow as he finally looked up, the street opening up before him with a hiss as a set of four armed guards, wearing pale white metal and face covering masks rushed out. Followed quickly by a small red headed girl in a lab coat.

"Opening sector 7 A" one of the guards said calmly, not even glancing at the boy as he dragged his feet towards the polished metal stairs, hoping none would notice what his shadow had become "Please don't rush out, the air out here isn't...fresh you know"

"I know, I know but...I just" the girl sighed shaking her head as she stood in front of the boy, not noticing the pleading look in his eye or perhaps misinterapting it for him begging her to get him out of his current situation "lost control of me emotions, I'll be back in the facility shortly, just let me talk to Jake first"

The boy ignored her and tried to walk around her.

"Hey, don't pretend I don't exist! talk to me! you have to talk to someone, you're life was just ruined, don't just lock yourself away like this, if you need to vent and cry, please just...please just do it, I'm here for you jake, I'll always will be even if you're demoted to nothing" the girl, huffed angrily, grabbing his arm, gripping it tightly. He could feel her metal bones beneath her skin as they dug into his. He turned to her and frowned deeply. Before today he had thought she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, but now...she looked plain and almost ugly. He saw every imperfection in her face in body, and compared them to the...inhuman perfection the demoness possessed, her looks were a brilliant flame compared to his dearest friend's spark.

the girl's eyes were filled with tears and sadness

"Please" She said again. The boy felt the demon's hands creeping on his back and around his neck as he turned away from his only friend, his heart growing cold as he listened to the voice in his ear and repeated what it said, in a voice as smooth as oil.

"No, it was my mistake" He said in a dull voice as he walked down the steps, the bright light casting his face in shadow "I nearly got innocents killed because I was an idiot, I deserve this and"

he choked, and felt the demon's weight on his back.

"Well it'll be bad for your reputation if you're friends with a janitor, just forget me, it'll be easier on both of us" he said, his voice breaking as tears streamed down his face

"WAIT" the girl yelled, trying to say something as he ran into the facility's maze of tunnels. She stepped back, gasping soundlessly as she swore she saw his shadow change into....something else.

She adjusted her glasses, and it was gone....a pit formed in her stomach but it was soon forgotten as anger took a hold of her mind and she screamed angrily at her friend. Though he was already gone.

Oh this place is weird!? why is it so clean? and these lights! I've never seen ones this bright...how did they make this place so perfect? all the walls look exactly the same, having the same honey comb pattern without a single flaw in the pattern, with lights set inside of them.

My eyes hurt just trying to glance at them, do people actually live down here.

I frown, laying back in the boy's shadow as he runs away from the stairs as the ceiling closes back up.

Maybe I was a bit harsh back there but..that girl seemed like she was going to be trouble if I didn't do something. Had to do it, even if it was cruel, I don't like it but I had to do it. Besides, this guy deserves it, he tried to hurt Iris and my babies. All of these people are like my....I sigh, shaking my head. Well they all hate anything that isn't human, which means they're all bastards but....still that girl didn't deserve having her heart broken just like that.

The boy called jake stops running

What do I do?
[] stay in his shadow
[] mess with him a bit
[] ask if he knows where tick tock's body is
[] Step out of his shadow and stretch, before assuming the shape of his friend.
[] Leave his shadow, leave mortal sight, and explore
[] Try to cheer him up.
[] Make things worse for him, out of spite.

You’re not Katsuya.

That’d be weird, because you’re trying to watch him right now.

Hold on, that sounds off. It’s not what it seems like, alright?

Okay, okay, okay. It is what it sounds like. Shut up, brain.

You triangulate. Electricity flows through where it shouldn’t, sparks and signals sent miles away, bouncing off of cell towers on and on until you get something. Closer. Just a little bit more.

Got it.

Closing your eyes, you see Katsuya’s phone camera turn on, as if another set of eyes has opened. And now all you see… is nothing. Greaaat.

You lie down and shift the pillow under you, trying to get into a more comfortable position. The floor’s kinda cold, and your clothes are kinda breezy, but it can’t be helped. Reaching forth blindly, you hand lightly taps upon an open bag of sugar candy, into which you reach and pop one in your mouth.

Okay, let’s try that again. Your psi activates once more, a tidal wave flowing forth from his phone, crashing into the walls of the room. A laptop webcam. Another person’s cell. Respective microphones.

This is a pain.
>The laptop’s on, at least.
>Turn on Katsuya’s microphone.
>Turn on ALL the microphones.
>Check the other cell phone.
>Put your head down and try not to die. You mean, fall asleep.
>Write-in.

You are HOLLY, a Titan Pilot for the Frontier Militia!

So far, your mission had been a fair success. You had managed to pick up the IMC deserters and convince them to join up with the Frontier Militia. Thanks to the repair of a planetary defense cannon, which was fixed thanks in no small part to you, you had managed to buy enough time for the IMC deserters to load up and evacuate the system.

So, now the Vengeance was leading a small flotilla of beat up but still brand new IMC warships and transports back to Harmony, where they could be processed.

However, due to the haste in which the evacuation was carried out, that also meant the Vengeance had to take on some of the deserters as passengers, including their apparent commander, Hessler, and her lieutenant/enforcer Hess.

You give a loud yawn as you wake up from a much needed rest. Rubbing your eyes, you wonder what you should do today. The ship wouldn't be reaching Harmony for at least another day, so you had plenty of free time in the meanwhile.

You are a traveler in a dark and forsaken land. Monsters and daemons are becoming stronger in power and numbers everyday. Humanity is in a dark place, and you fight to push back the night.
---

The only light you have comes from what little moon glow comes through the tree branches. Your breath comes out ragged and uneven as you sprint down the beaten dirt path. It takes significant effort to stay focused as you notice a shadow on either side of you, matching your pace just past the underbrush. You can hear the third one coming up behind you, gaining speed. A low, unnatural howl breaks the sound of running and labored breaths. The shadows jump towards you revealing themselves.

You pivot, turning to face your enemies. In front of you are three maggot riddled, rotting hounds. Patches of fur and skin are missing from their bodies and dead, sightless eyes track your every move. Time to make your stand, you fall into the familiar motions of your training.

Like a vase shattering in reverse, the pieces start coming together.

You loved Cylellinth, she convinced you to run away. The master of arms, a brutal fighter often brought back prizes for your family.

He would come for you.

While primarily mercantile family, a lesser "noble family" (a very effective mercenary group given status by marrying into the family) had been absorbed into your own. They would come with the master of arms, to take you back.

You know the layout, how they fight, how he thinks.

>What do you do?
You have two pieces of important information:
Why they are here.
Their layout and fighting capabilities.

For each piece of information roll 1d20+3
