I just checked and "ponychan" still exists apparently. It was the big site when the global pony ban was a thing. /mlp/ pretends to hate ponychan, or at least did last I heard, but they are exactly the fucking same.

I don't know moot's actual motivation at the time he established /mlp/ but what he said was that it was wrong to banish a community from 4chan that originated on 4chan.

Everyone assumed that it was just a containment board because people were still posting ponies everywhere in spite of the ban.

What I suspect is that he just wanted the traffic back and that a community of people that formed around a literal 21 minute toy commercial were probably the kind of people who click ads more than others.

It's give and take. Pony fans gain a board and lose the right to show their faces anywhere else.

It would be harder to "justify" the ban of all ponies everywhere forever if they didn't have their own board, and even if moot doesn't actually have to justify anything to anyone the people act up less when he did.
