2003 to mid 2004 is Old 4chan, when the site was still relatively obscure and finding its footing. Its culture would be unrecognizable to posters now because there was no '4chan identity' and there was nothing to fit in with.

Late 2004 to early 2006 is the "golden age," lots of iconic raids and famous memes are born in this era. Also many now-major boards are added.

Mid 2006 to late 2007 is the "silver age," a period of expansion and change, but also of gathering storm clouds. The community's demographics are shifting at this point as newer posters flood in, but it is still a hotbed of internet culture. The site becomes too popular for its own good in this era.

2008 is great collapse of 4chan's culture. Project Chanology irrevocably changes the site's ethos and the subsequent invasion of newfags overwhelms the already dwindling golden age population.

I see everything before 2008 as the "First Age" of 4chan, though it's hardly a uniform period since the site is very different in 2007 than it was in 2003, it's more like an arc of change. But the culture that arose in the golden age was pretty much destroyed in 2008.

In retrospect such careless high profile activity was not wise, but wisdom is not a trait I or anyone would associate with 4chan. At least in the past we knew how to have fun.

Also, if you think 4chan is popular nowadays only due to raids, you're absolutely wrong. I mean, of course, raids did make 4chan somewhat infamously popular, but you can't put all the blame on them. Bomb threats, death threats, hacking, child pornography and many other illegal activities were posted here, which drew attention to the news. What do you think the media would cover, rape and bomb threats or autistic man-children raiding a kid's game?
