I think I'm beginning to understand why we have these problems in the first place.

Yes, I do know how corporate jobs work. However, in much of my experience with other sites, having been a long-time, regular member of the community is usually considered a required qualification to become a moderator. I don't think that anyone can really ever be suited to moderate a community they don't understand. Any buisiness entity that treats it like just another employee position is, IMHO, looking at things all wrong.

Moderators have a position in online communities akin to judges IRL. They are expected to act fairly, but firmly, and with impartiality and reason. To expect someone who is wholly unfamiliar with a community to then come moderate it is like out-of-the-blue filling a federal circuit court with an Indian judge who has never spent a day in the US before being appointed.

I have two suggestions in this matter:

1) Moderators should be specific to one or two boards. They should not have powers elsewhere.
2) Moderators should have spent some decent quantity of time, such as a year, as a janitor on the board/s they will be moderating without any significant incidents
3) In addition to their capcode, moderators should have either a name or unique ID that publicly attaches to all their moderation actions, for the purpose of accountability.

While I can't say I was around to personally witness it, anyone familiar with the site's history should remember that /b/-day was caused by very similar issues. 4chan has always prided itself on being able to hold its own against assaults from much larger online communities. Being deprived of whatever is perceived as a method of defense against such attacks is somewhat like being disarmed. Eurofags and japs like Hiro may not immediately understand this, since they live in countries with no personal right to arms, but it's a very strong sentiment here.

Back then in 2006, the enemies at the gates were furfags. Now it's redditors. The characters change, but the story remains the same. I sincerely hope that Hiro can avoid repeating the mistakes of the past this time.
