So because of this, and the previous thread on /qa/ about Sardines, I went out and bought some, and they're actually pretty tasty. I wasn't expecting that. Cartoons from my childhood would have had me believe that they're gross, because like Charlie Brown hated Sardines and stuff like that, but it turns out they're salty and umami. They're really good. I highly recommend everybody else in the thread try them.
