It's the currency of the land. Outside of this place many of those same people wouldn't be caught dead uttering out loud the fact that they've been coming here for years. Being Anonymous (or at least pseudonymous) here has its perks.
Nobody demands respect for it. It's just annoying seeing a newfag go on about what the site is or what the site's history is while clearly never being there for it.
It'd be like if I wrote a biography about your life and just made random shit up, and when you corrected me I threw a fit about you knowing more about your own life having been there than I would with my borderline fanfiction of your life.
