use a fine bastard file and give it a standard utility edge. a machete can be made really sharp, but unless it is really good quality steel like an ontario knife co. machete, you are going to jack it up the first time you hack something if you try to make the edge too fine. maybe give it a rough edge and hone it finer towards the handle, but i wouldn't put too much effort into the curved part at the tip. its going to take a lot of abuse.
