I'll take a stab at this....

Liberals are not at their core stupid or even bad people they have a very natural compassion for their fellow man.

This is normal, if you don't feel for people who have it worse than you then you're some kind of sociopath or something. This is a good impulse, it is what makes us act decent to each other.

We have other impulses though, we have a sense of justice or fairness. We want to go find the bad guy who is causing this pain for others and stop him. Also a normal and natural impulse.

The Liberal feels these things and wants to help- to make things better. However there are too many needy, too many suffering, too many in pain. He can't possibly help them all and if he tries he may destroy himself and his family in the process. Likewise he cannot just steal the money of others to fix these problems as it would be immoral(I know they do, I'm getting to that).

The Liberal sees the very real fact that the rich get richer, the poor poorer... and that the poor have little power. The rich abuse their power for their own good(again, this is natural) the poor can't do shit.

So the liberal sees the system as the problem, the rich as the problem, the powerful as the problem, or the majority as the problem. These things become the villain... once you've identified something as the villain you can attack it or take from it with your internal idea of morality intact. So they do this, they attack, they take, they cheat, they lie. All of it is now justified because they're only hurting the bad guy to help the good guy.

The problem of course is for their internal narrative to work, you have to throw out any idea of individualism or self determination. You have to put people in broad categories and create differing rules and expectations for them based on this. You must always look at people based on what group they belong to, not who they are as a human being.
