Probably just the kanji part. Vocab is the heart of learning Japanese. I started from there, and worked outwards to grammar and such. Learning from a traditional grammar book won't help you a whole lot in Japan. If you don't want to go to Japan, than it's not worth the effort. I had a few approach me when I was just chilling, doing whatever. They would chat, talk about whatever basically. Their English wasn't great but if you listen you can definitely understand them. Same dilemma as OP. I am fluent in German, Russian, English and Spanish. And I just can't decide whether to learn Chinese or Japanese. Chinese is hard as fuck to speak because of the sounds and there is nothing that interests me culturally like movies or manga. Japanese on the other hand is beautiful in my ears and there is a shitload of things I can read like ln, vn and manga but it's just not a very useful language.
China is crashing though and will likely become the next Japan economically, so it will be not very relevant.

Took the N3 last time, scored in the 2nd percentile.This year, I'll try the N2 (though I'm currently already somewhere between N2 and N1 level, gotta aim for them highscores) and I'll go for the N1 next year.
My interest in Japanese started out like with everyone else, gaems and anime. But since I started being able to read Japanese without much of a problem, it's just lost some of its magic. At the moment, I pretty much just continue doing it for the challenge, and being able to "read" doujinshi without having to rely on shitty translations is also kinda nice.
Waste of time and money? Maybe. But at this point, the daily vocab and kanji has just become something I want to do every day. Plus it's probably a good memory exercise.

That's not how language works. At worst, Japanese will continue to incorporate borrowed words from other languages and continue its progression into being a largely different language from what it was a century before... as it's pretty much done for nearly two millennia since the Chinese discovered the island.

Shit, by your definition of a "dead language" English has died about four or five separate deaths in the last 1000 years alone. Japanese is a fucking iron wall of language preservation compared to some of the radical shifts English went through following the Norman conquest.

Good luck. N2 ain't so bad if you keep a well-rounded study regimen of new words, grammar and kanji up while figuring out how to study quickly with contextual knowledge that goes beyond rote memorization.
The fluency gap between N2 and N1, though, is wider than the fucking grand canyon. I've been stuck here at N2 for a better part 2 years. If you can't breeze through a Japanese newspaper like you could in your native language, or listen and fully understand a college-level lecture, N1 is pretty much out of reach.

Korea is literally a knock off Japan, Japan was growing at some point, Korea is literally slowing down already they have the exact same demographic issue already looming. The only difference being is that Japan is the main regional power along with China while South Korea is more the baby, Japan has much more international presence and weight. Japan has literally double the people and triple the GDP. If Korean is a worthwhile second-language then Japanese is only more so. Japan is so big it can stagnate forever and be relevant, Korea can't ever reach that level.

Some of the Koreans could be a lil wierd but for the most part Koreans/HKers/Japs that came to uni here are doing so because they are interested in the west to an extent and therefore a decent enough.
