Local charity events/organizations. Do not jump into international charity volunteering straight away. Do local charity work for about a year. I mean you could, but doing local charity stuff will teach you how to work within these kinds of systems and give you some experience, even something to talk about on the bigger trips.

Your local college or university would be the best place to look into these things. Or High school guidance counselors should know about them. I haven't done it in years so shit definitely has changed (and stayed the same).

All the heads of my high school departments would have been able to rattle off 2-3 organizations that would be a good solution.

Community colleges not so much. My local CC didn't know jack at the time (2009) but the local private college (FAU) had plenty of info on them. If you go to a department head and ask "where would I go to find out" they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Another place to "back trace" the info is to look at US (Or CND I'd imagine) government grants and see who won them for the previous year. Look for international aid organizations, most of the stuff will be in central and sub-Saharan Africa (Enjoy your ebola). But I've also seen stuff for the south pacific, India, Australia believe it or not, and some parts of east Asia. Find their website and contact them that way, inquiring about volunteer work. They may initially simply put you to work locally and then one you get to know the org they might have slots - but these are smaller endeavors.
