Most people go to college for 4 years and accrue a massive amount of debt so that they can go right back into the service industry. College degrees shouldn't be something everyone has, because that devalues them as a commodity. The people who are going to be working service jobs their entire lives should be fine with highschool. For people going into a specific trade, trade schools. Making good money as a welder is easy, you just have to know where to look, and what to look for. I'll give you an example. When they were building the new 49'ers stadium they used union workers as per their contract. The local union didn't have enough members so they had to draw in welders from outside the local while still staying in the brotherhood. They offered the base regional pay, plus travel expense, plus 75 a day per diem, on a 30/30 overtime scale. I didn't go to that one because I was across the country.

Half the guys I know just go to a job, make their money, and leave.
