>A MOTLEY crew of vigilante militia men clad in black jackets adorned with Vikings and national flags have started patrolling the streets of Finland. It is one of the latest instances of public backlash to an influx of migrants in Europe.
>The group calls itself Soldiers of Odin and formed late last year. Authorities say its numbers have swelled to roughly 500 members who routinely stalk suburbs in Finland where groups of asylum seekers have been settled.
>The group’s members say they are “patriots” who are protecting native Finns but the group has been heavily criticised for its links with far right extremists and neo-Nazi groups.
>“In our opinion, Islamist intruders cause insecurity and increase crime,” the group says on its website. And a self-proclaimed member said on Facebook the group was “a patriotic organisation that fights for a white Finland”.
>One organiser, Mika Ranta, told Finnish newspaper Aamulehti that the influx of migrants, “where many different cultures met”, “caused fear and concern in the community”.
