From what I have seen they learn only things they want to learn, trying to force them to learn something is a near impossible task. The one I live with can operate an iPad and a DVD player all day, but can't spell even 3 letter words or count to 10.

What you say is a form of behavior and ALL behavior has a utilitarian origin. Saying certain things that go against the overall wants of a group gives listeners the implication of weakness. This undermines confidence, which undermines performance, which makes the cost of propagation / maintenance of your group more difficult.

For example, if you're the CEO of a company and suddenly you say, "Oh god my company is bad" do you think your company is going to perform as well? Do you think the board of directors wants to have you there?
