Democrats represented the wishes of small farmers and were generally agricultural based. They were pro the free coinage of silver and against large corporations ruining agrarian life with mechanization.

Republicans were pro large enterprise, and utilized tariffs to decrease taxes. They were constantly in favor of big business, as they are today, which utterly disinterested small time farmers, the main voter-base of the Democratic party. They were vehemently pro the gold standard, which made money scarce to help business but at the same time hurt small farmers, and their tariffs, while protecting home industries by artificially forcing Americans to buy home made goods, hurt Farmers and small manufacturers who could not afford sometimes ridiculously expensive home prices.

Tariffs eliminated foreign competition, so home industries could control the price of their goods. They often raised these prices, severely hurting small farmers.

TlDr; Southerners were farmers. Republicans were pro big business. Southerners voted for Democrats. Democrats represented slavery b/c essential to farming efficiently at the time,

The Democratic Party was formed by Andrew Jackson and was created around Jeffersonian ideals of limited federal rach which allowed leeway for slavery in written law. The GOP was founded as an anti-slavery party. After the civil war, as soon as the south was 'reconstructed,' those states once again began voting for the Democratic party once again out of tradition and after political accommodation made by other regions. This inter-party accommodation would last until the mid-20th century. Eventually the parties began dividing along lines of ideology and thus the south was more at home in the conservative GOP than the Democratic party. This process was slow with the modern Civil Rights movement pushed many white southerners out of the party and many blacks in. The south being the blackest region in America, the civil rights issue and integration specifically meant much more in their daily lives than people's in other regions.

The switch wasn't instant there were many splinters groups and factions. The core philosophy of the Democrat party didn't start to change until the progressive era.

The GOP was found by Lincoln (a Hamiltononian) and Forty eighters (European, mostly german, socialist who immigrants who left Europe after the failed socialst revolution in 1848).
