It's only the conservatives who are also christfags that and dooming the ideology as a whole. They hold great significance to Christianity because they were taught to believe and have faith from a young age. Very rarely do you see someone convert to Christianity for purposes of "oh, these teachings and stories very likely happened." Oftentimes people find religion as a way to cope with a traumatic event in their life. In short, it gives people hope - fabricated or not.

My brother literally told me that he would jump off a cliff if there wasn't a god. He's always been super into it, and I imagine the sense of betrayal he'd feel if he would come to the realization that his religion is false would be pretty damn painful.
