With Windows XP, you didn't need admin privileges to install applications i.e. you could write an installer to run in the background and no one would be the wiser.

Vista came along and fixed that, but a lot of people didn't like the password prompt popping up all the time.

Windows is much more secure than it used to be, but not as secure as OSX/Unix/Linux. The inability for Microsoft to develop a way to consolidate its services and processes makes it very easy for malicious software to hide.

It also makes it very easy to kick a DLL file into a directory where you know it will get run by an application that is already authorized.

Where as *NIX systems don't have any of those issues. However you can still run a script with "sudo" and have it basically take over your system, but you got to really be a idiot to do that, and it's a very narrow hole.

So yeah, windows and security, not something you should depend on in my opinion.

The reality is that throughout the years all flavours of linux have had severe security vulnerability that allow for privileage escallation, and so has windows, they're both OS's coded by fallible humans and have well documented history of issues.

Windows back in the XP and prior days was less secure for a number of reasons, which have been fixed in modern versions of the OS.

There's a full disk permission system, system RAM is protected, user space is separated and apps are installed to specific user areas and not the entire system, system level components require an admin password.

And as far as HIPPA goes, it just so happens I was in the hospital the other month getting an IV put in, and this nobody IV tech starts asking me about whether or not I had fun visiting XYZ country years ago based on the fact that this computer terminal had given him a list of the vaccinations I'd gotten back then. I have enough old people in the family to understand that compromises sometimes have to be made in the interests of getting people taken care of properly, but how many other people, HIPPA or not, have my medical records? They even made FDR shit in a special outhouse so that the enemy couldn't literally reverse-engineer his poop to discover his medical condition. I'm no FDR, but what are people thinking?

As far as the actual security of your medical data. I can tell you pretty much without a doubt that it is really fucking out there.

You have "laws" made up by congress and enforced by bureaucrats running windows xp.

So, while people make a big stink about it on paper, and I had to really step up my game to build my little security consulting company. In reality most doctors use budget software and badly implemented "bulk" HIPPA compliant CRMs.

Someone had a SMS "appointment reminder system", they had piggy backed onto the whole medical records database to get access to appointments and "suggest" appointments to patients based on their medical history.

Basically it ended up shitting out people's medical history ( and some times even SS numbers ) over SMS to wrong phone numbers, never mind phone numbers that have been changed.

No I never said that, re-read what I said. I said it's a harder OS to use, not that I find it harder to use, I'm Head of ICT as my day job and have been a sys ad using linux and windows boxes for a bit over a decade.

Linux isn't targeted at end users and doesn't have any real decent GUIs to speak of, it requires more knowledge to do basic tasks, and is especially unfriendly to novices with regards to troubleshooting, the average novice user cannot use a CLI and 99% of the time when you have an issue in linux you're stuck in the CLI to tweak some file or other by hand.

Most server admins create scripts for both linux and windows to automate tasks which is why for power users linux is not any harder to use, the type of approach to your work in both environments is nearly identical.

I know I can root both linux and windows machines with ease because both have a long laundry list of privilege escalation issues, the fact that I can do this without having deep knowledge of how processes and services interact with each other is a testament to how they're both insecure and go through exploitation/fix cycles.

I've been doing penetration testing for years now so I've done both red team and blue team work and regularly pop both windows and Linux boxes of all flavours.
