Here is an example:

A popular youtuber who makes videos that get lots of views and does reviews on indie games gets attention from the developers of the indie game.
Wanting to get more attention to their game, the developer will pay off the person or do other favors in order to get a good review. It's profit for both of them so its a win win.

The game reviewer also goes on another website (say reddit which arguably is more pop-culture and masses friendly than 4chan) and due to his popularity makes friends with an admin on a gaming subreddit or whatever. Due to them being in with each other the mod will delete any thread or post that causes harm to that reviewer.
The same goes for the developer if he or she is friends with the admin of something somewhere.
The result is a triangle affair between the mod, reviewer, and developer. Pretty much your start to finish way to have control over your market and show people stuff that you want them to see.
To get more power you simply expand the web or it does so itself, which allows for even more censoring and covering up, all for profit and attention.

And the people will keep farming it too, with new youtube channels and their own websites and merchandise.

This would be ok if they stated that they were acting like a company, but they hide behind that and act like they do it for the fans, and thats where the issue is as well as the conflicts of interest.

During my time on Facebook as an admin in the community I saw how bad this would get and its actually caused the culture (if there is any) of the internet to go downhill into a pile of mush.
People would literally farm facebook pages and spam money links and than sell the pages to another admin (I can provide links if you guy want to these groups that do this).
They posted the same content every single day and nothing new came out of it.
They even went as far as to post ads on 4chan.
It killed the originality of the place, and as long as people continue to attack anyone who has an opinion that would upset the balance of who has power in this web than websites will continue to take down stuff they see as hurtful to their protector and their money.
Its going to take a huge internet "revolution" for this to change, its not just Zoe Quin it extends to a ton of others.

I'm hoping to discover some names and be pointed to dev's that are willing to get their names mentioned as "I got fucked by the indie dev popular cliques because I wouldn't cave into their bullshit". That's all we need. We need more and more dev's willing to come out.

What we also need, is a new gaming journalism site. I personally would LOVE to write for such, but only one problem: I don't have a journalism degree, and I think it would be fucking stupid to be a "journalist" with no degree in such. And frankly, people that know what they're doing and are gonna listen to the community, not tumblr, to do these stories.

I mean, I've offered to give info to Gamesnosh, but no answer from them yet.
