Prefaced by acknowledging that I am a business-owner myself. I think that businesses, as institutions granted permission to operate by the state, should be compelled to offer any services which they advertise to any paying customer, provided their request does not constitute a criminal act. This is in keeping with their role as licensed operators of the state, which has a duty to protect its citizens against discrimination. If a printer/bakery/landscaper/what-have-you can deny services based on one criteria, it affords precedence to allow for discrimination based on any criteria.

I also think that individuals, as free agents, have no such duty to service any and all clients, and maintain a freedom of association. Private contracts and arrangements between individuals need not be compelled to act to the same standards as a licensed business. But the right to operate as a business is a privilege, and it is in the interest of the nation entire that they be compelled to service all citizens.

A business is not a person. People have rights. Businesses don't have rights. The right to turn down service based on religion is bogus. If you make cakes, or shirts, then serve your damn customers. I support the right of a pastor to refuse to perform a gay wedding. That's different. That's freedom of religion. I don't think a county clerk should be able to do the same. If your religion prevents you from being able to do this job then find another job,
