In 2020, President Pence runs for re-election, while the Democrats double-down on the platform and rhetoric of Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign, nominating DNC deputy chair Keith Ellison. With rapid distrust in both political parties, Ellison nevertheless narrowly wins the election by 272 electoral votes to Pence's 266. Widespread protests break out, as many claim that Ellison and the Democrats will do nothing to heal the national divide and only make it worse. Just weeks after the election, WikiLeaks releases classified documents suggesting that the DNC may have falsified voting records, prompting more protest and debate.
That's when the war starts.

Following Ellison's inauguration in January 2021, the APF begins their campaign, dubbed 'Operation Black Eagle'. Chapters across the country carry out terrorist attacks against government facilities and officials, businesses, and other civilians - anyone with political, financial, or personal ties to the government. The attacks spark protests, which spark riots. The OPLC take this as their chance to act, and affiliated cells clash with the AFP right in the streets of nearly every major city in America. Thousands of civilians, rogue anarchists, gangs, and criminals use the opportunity to rampage, turning entire districts of major cities into war zones. President Ellison initially backs off from a military solution out of social justice fears, as many rioters are non-white, but this only makes things worse as the fighting spreads like a cancer. The AFP and the OPLC engage in sporadic battles in major cities for the next three years, and the White House finally declares martial law. The first wave of military policing is relatively successful, but deadly attacks on both sides continue. The OPLC have evolved from a reaction against a specific group to a terrorist network in its own right, killing and destroying in the name of identity communism.
By 2024, most of America is on lockdown. Food is rationed, strict curfews for all ages are enforced, the first amendment is virtually muted, and the police and the military roam the streets in armored behemoths. The US has lost most of its allies; the UK is crumbling under massive debt and sanctions from the EU, which itself is all but collapsed as only a few core nations remain. Russia is set to overtake the US militarily by 2028 and China economically by 2030. The Presidential Election of 2024 will be a crucial turning point for this country. The Democrats have done nothing, the Republicans are ideologically neutered, and extremists have proselytized the common American.
