Indigenous advocates from around the world are calling on a UN committee to make appropriating Indigenous cultures illegal — and to do it quickly.

Delegates from 189 countries, including Canada, are in Geneva this week as part of a specialized international committee within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations agency.

Since it began in 2001, the committee has been working on creating and finishing three pieces of international law that would expand intellectual-property regulations to protect things like Indigenous designs, dances, words and traditional medicines.

The meeting takes place as concern grows worldwide about the rights of cultures to control their own materials. In the U.S. this week, designer Tory Burch agreed to change the description of one of her coats for women after Romanians protested that it had been described as African-inspired when it actually appropriated a traditional Romanian garment.

Speaking to the committee Monday, James Anaya, dean of law at the University of Colorado, said the UN's negotiated document should "obligate states to create effective criminal and civil enforcement procedures to recognize and prevent the non-consensual taking and illegitimate possession, sale and export of traditional cultural expressions."

Anaya said the document should also look at products that are falsely advertised as Indigenous made or endorsed by Indigenous groups.

That would mean products like those in U.S. based retailer Urban Outfitters "Navajo" line, Anaya said, including "Navajo hipster panties," a "peace treaty feather necklace" and a "Navajo print flask."

Why stop there? You can only use what you yourself directly invented, and you can't copy anything anyone else has done or you violate their rights.

If cultural appropriation is illegal, sorry Indians, you're gonna have to go back to hunting buffalo and murdering each other in tribe wars. We may as well wipe you out at that point, since you can't appropriate White man's technology.

Any non-White person wearing Jeans or Plaid sweaters is committing a hate crime.

You and I may have a thing or two in common. It's complicated, but I'm worried about our Western-Atlantic civilization and our place in the world. Also, I think there are many policies often described as "liberal" and "conservative" that could work if moderately and properly applied.

NEWARK — The word “pilgrimage” usually evokes visions of far-off, exotic places, but for some 100 gay and lesbian Catholics and their families, a pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart here on a recent Sunday was more like a homecoming.

The doors to the cathedral were opened to them, and they were welcomed personally by the leader of the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin. They were seated on folding chairs at the cathedral’s center, in front of the altar in the towering sanctuary, under the blue-tinted glow of stained glass.

“I am Joseph, your brother,” Cardinal Tobin told the group, which included lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics from around New York and the five dioceses in New Jersey. “I am your brother, as a disciple of Jesus. I am your brother, as a sinner who finds mercy with the Lord.”

The welcoming of a group of openly gay people to Mass by a leader of Cardinal Tobin’s standing in the Roman Catholic Church in this country would have been unthinkable even five years ago. But Cardinal Tobin, whom Pope Francis appointed to Newark last year, is among a small but growing group of bishops changing how the American church relates to its gay members. They are seeking to be more inclusive and signaling to subordinate priests that they should do the same.

Are our institutions hiding the fact that dinosaurs existed with man?
If so why?
What are the political ramifications of this?

>As western pioneers colonized tribal lands around the world, reports of dragons continued to come back to Europe. It became standard practice for cartographers to identify unexplored regions at the periphery of their maps with the cryptic words: “Here be dragons!”
>Author Charles Gould sought to dispel supernatural notions and give a sober account of the dragon. “The dragon is nothing more than a serpent of enormous size; and they formerly distinguished three sorts of them in the Indies. Viz. such as were in the mountains, such as were bred in the caves or in the flat country, and such as were found in fens and marshes. The first is the largest of all, and are covered with scales as resplendent as polished gold.
>These have a kind of beard hanging from their lower jaw, their eyebrows large, and very exactly arched; their aspect the most frightful that can be imagined, and their cry loud and shrill… their crests of a bright yellow, and a protuberance on their heads of the colour of a burning coal. Those of the flat country differ from the former in nothing but in having their scales of a silver colour, and in their frequenting rivers, to which the former never come.” (Gould, Charles,Mythical Monsters,W.H. Allen & Co., London, 1886, p. 140.)

Pic related is a dracorex hogwartsia, a dino fossil discovered in 2004. It bears a strong resemblance to historical accounts of dragons in European mythology.

I find it hard to believe that we just dreamed up the idea of a dinosaur out of pure imagination, across various cultures, and then thousands of years later, by coincidence discovered that not only have creatures similar to these existed, but some of them are EXACTLY like the dragons in ancient "mythology"

What other secrets about us are the political (((higher powers))) hiding from us?

More sources on the dragon thing btw

>Marco Polo wrote of his travels to the province of Karajan and reported on huge serpents, which at the fore part have two short legs, each with three claws. “The jaws are wide enough to swallow a man, the teeth are large and sharp, and their whole appearance is so formidable that neither man, nor any kind of animal can approach them without terror.” (Polo, Marco,The Travels of Marco Polo, 1961, pp. 158-159.) Marco Polo goes on to describe how the local citizens of the area hunted and killed these creatures. He noted that the reptiles were nocturnal (assisted by “eyes larger than a loaf”), dwelling in “caverns” during the day to avoid the heat. After they had killed their prey, Polo wrote that they would find a water source such as a lake, spring, or river. Their massive bodies left “deep impressions” in the paths “as if a heavy beam had been drawn along the sands.” Since the creaturespredictablyfollowed these same rutted paths, the nativesburied large “wooden stakes tipped with sharp iron spikes, which they cover with sand” (p. 159).

Any other supernatural things you think the political elite are hiding from us?

When the choice to remove a flag choice was removed, I initially thought it was retarded. Over time, I ended up feeling like defaulting to flags by geolocation added a nice element to /pol/. There became an ability to observe how people from around the world responded to political events and it added elements of both education and banter. THIS IS IMPORTANT. What is more political on an international board than being able to see clear differences between geographical regions when talking about geopolitical events??

What does choosing a flag do? It encourages LARPing and apolitical threads especially if there's a fucking Kekistan flag. That alone is the biggest possible encouraging to shitposting possible. All these elements add up to /pol/ being shittier with flags being able to be selected. It was an improvement when it was removed and it is a mistake to bring this feature back.

Kekistani is a good thing, then you know who to avoid.
>>
An anon noted earlier today that a good idea would be to have two flags. One geolocation flag, and one that you could choose. This is a great idea and would add a nice new refreshing dynamic to /pol/. That is what should be done if flag choosing is to be re-introduced at all.

Red Pills about Asia. Many people seem to believe that asians are high IQ capable people, but the reality is that their closer to niggers than to humans.

The only exceptions are Taiwan, Korea and Japan, and that's because they're basically US colonies. They weren't and they're still not able of defending themselves. They should thank America every day of their.lives because if it.wasn't for america, they'd be a satellite country of communist China.

The only few things that they're capable of doing ia because of their slave mentality that enables them to work as a slave for their master.

China has a bunch of shitty places left over by failed communism, but that's like flying to Detroit and seeing people get killed and robbed and assuming your experiences there represent the entirety of America.

I've travelled from different provinces in China when me and my friends were taking a year off school, and in some areas the Chinese were absolutely disgusting - mainly city areas and high density population areas, but in rural places it's completely different and smaller cities, the people act differently.

Stfu Zhang. China is quite literally the world's anus. The only reason it hasn't end up like North Korea is because it allows western companies to take a dump on its chest, allowing them to build their factories there and use its people as slave workers building billions of plastic western shit for $1.50 a day. It's a wonderland of pollution, shit and piss.
