To the west, the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah held a military parade in al-Qusayr, Syria, while to the east, the Shiite militias known as Popular Mobilization Units (PMUs) captured Tal Afar airport in Iraq.

If its proxies do in fact capture the town, Iran would likely be able to establish a corridor from the Iraqi border province of Diyala, up through the Hamrin Mountains, and all the way up to Tal Afar en route to the Syrian border. On the other side of Syria, Iranian-backed forces already have multiple routes to Lebanon via al-Qusayr and other towns in the region.

Once again Iran rears its ugly head. They are by far the strongest middle eastern nation east of Israel, particularly after what has happened to Iraq. They already wield enormous influence in Syria. If the fall of ISIS allows them to expand their access and influence in Iraq, the results could be disastrous. Syria and Iraq are already devastated and couldn't possibly resist.

Especially with the ongoing war in Yemen, it is becoming increasingly apparent that if the US does not continue to intervene, Iran will be in position to essentially dominate the Middle East as far west as the Israeli border, either through conquest or soft power. Saudi Arabia is frankly a disorganized joke of a country and can't provide a real counterbalance. Obviously none of us want to bankrupt ourselves fighting this war, so what can we do?
