I recently watched this short mini-docu on the Doberman Pinscher which is a personal protection dog foremost. This expert breeder was talking about how the American breeds are watered down, more like Doberman mixed with a Lab, whereas the Western European breeds have very strict standards, including strict standards for beauty, a temperment test which includes social skills like being around new people and crowds, and also a simulated attack where the dog must defend the owner. If the dog fails any of these tests, you are not allowed to breed this dog, and subsequently this failed dogs genes will not pass on.

This got me thinking about Eugenics and selective breeding with humans. Why is it so taboo? We don't have to be cruel about it, no need to terminate or segregate undesirables. Just make them sterile and let them live a long and prosporous life, except with no offspring. If you carry genetic diseases or you are just physically weak and mentally weak (for example if you are bipolar/manic or prone to depression, or you have the gene for Osteoporosis) then you should not breed. Society would be preventing the future suffering of your potential offspring. There are working dog breeds that excell at different areas, like the Portuguese Water Dog could herd fish into nets and swim for hours, Irish Wolf Hounds hunted and killed off wolves in Ireland, Swiss Mountain Dogs were great at guarding the families, homes and herds of farmers. Imagine if we had specialized selective human breeding program?
What are the upsides and downsides of Eugenics, or selective breeding, or intelligent design, whichever you might call it?
