Can we talk about how Leica actually has been introducing competitively priced cameras in new categories?
I'll elaborate.

The origonal Leica M product line has literally been around forever.
They recently came out with the M 262. priced at a low price for an M, the 262 abandons Live View and Video as well as dropping some weight from the previous 240.
$5K a camera doesn't really make Leica a profitable company alone, though. The volume is simply too low. So they enter other product categories.
Leica S has been around a while (2009. Not bad for Medium Format digital)
This product is targeted at medium format studio photogs -- which is out of Leica's wheelhouse from the M.
$14K isn't cheap, though. And the lenses aren't any cheaper. This is nearly 2* the price of other medium formats.
Leica D-Lux is pretty new. It's targeted at anybody who wants a pocket camera with the Leica name on it. With a Micro 4/3 sensor, the quality may be nice. Who knows.
That said, it's priced at $1.1K
This thing is more expensive than the full-frame sony RX1. Kind of crazy.
Speaking of the RX1...

The Leica Q was recently announced to wide acclaim among people who are into the attached-lens-big-sensor crowd.
The Leica Q actually competes on features with the Sony RX1, Fuji x100 and others.
That said, it does NOT compete on price with any of those.

One of the biggest categories recently is the mirrorless-dslr-replacement category. Currently dominated by Sony, photographers seem to be tired of carrying around heavy camera bodies and want something new and shiny to spend their money on.
So, Leica, the OG mirrorless company (Shut up, Leica R and Leica S fans) it's surprising it took them this long to get into that market with the Leica SL.
That said, the Leica SL kind of misses the boat on a few things. People like Sony Alphas because they are light and can mount lenses from tons of different companies because of the flange distance.
Leica's camera is heavy, but technically could have lens adapters built in.
Kind of missing the boat, but they did NOT skimp on the features of this camera. It's pretty nice. And it better be for this price. $7.5K dollars would let you buy TWO Sony A7R2s.

The Leica T is an interesting crop sensor interchangeable lens system.
Currently, I'm pretty sure the market here is dominated by Fuji in the crop-system market. Fuji gets people with that old school, leica inspired look (Looking at you, newly announced Fuji X-Pro-2)
This camera leaves a lot to be desired with features compared to it's competition, AND it costs more. But it's actually close this time.
$1.8K for the Leica, $1.7K for the Fuji xp2.
The newest Leica on the block is the one that ACTUALLY matters.
Leica just introduced the Leica X-U, a waterproof camera (Proof, not weather reisistent) that can actually go anywhere.
It's a fixed lens (35mm equiv) crop sensor camera.
It's $3.9K, which aint' cheap, but it's also the only camera in it's category, which may actually be a cool category. With the people these days doing action camera stuff, having a really good quality camera that you can treat like a gopro (to an extent) would be a nice proposition.

I guess you are paying for the Leica brand with all of these, but still. Leica's brand didn't become Leica's brand for nothing. Their lenses are suuuper sharp and they focus on simplicity in camera controls.
At least for me, when I hold an M vs the Sony Alpha series, it's hard to say I wouldn't choose the M over it. The build quality, performance and user experience really is fantastic.
Just wanted to point out that Leica has actually been pushing their brand into a lot of new categories.
If they clip the top 1% off of product categories (For the people where money is no object), then they still greatly increase their profits by introducing more product categories. It's a pretty smart business choice, I think. It also enforces their brand in so many ways.

>Their lenses are suuuper sharp
>what is leica glow
Yeah, no, they're not.
They do have their own character which I like, but they're not super sharp lenses.

is this still not available for purchase?

The new 35 lux and 50 lux are sharp edge to edge wide open. Some older ones do have character, though.

Any discussion about Leica is pointless on /p/. It just descends into people criticizing cameras they've never even seen never mind used.
It's a shame because it's an interesting brand with a lot of interesting cameras.
Life's too short for all this gearfaggotry. If you like a camera, buy it and use it. If you don't, then don't. Simple.
If you spend more time giving a shit about equipment other people you don't know choose to buy than worrying about your own photographic output then you're a gearfag of the highest order.

I didn't believe you until I saw those ebay prices. damn the price has come down a ton, albeit for used models. comes out to a better deal than and original A7 if you just wanted a nice small cam.
