There are several different exposure modes

The one you used "Aperture Priority" means that you set what aperture you want, and the camera will figure out the proper shutter speed to make the exposure correct.

Shutter priority is the opposite, you set the shutter speed you want, and the camera will try to adjust the aperture to the proper size for a correct exposure.

Then there is manual mode, which you set both the aperture and shutter speed to get the exposure you want.

I'd say learn Manual mode, it will help you gain a better understanding of what the camera is doing and you'll have better overall control
