Anyway, first time shooting the cars with the flash. Not totally happy with the job I've done, I didn't pick a good enough background and i haven't got the technique for using the flash on cars right yet, I tried to just adapt what I did on bikes and it didn't quite work perfectly.

For next time I'm either gonna try and pick up an LED panel and get light painting or try and find a strip box that I can fold down to fit on my bike.

yes bringing your own light source is probably the best way to deal with having no light but that brings with it it's own pains, some general tips that don't require much extra gear or editing would be.

1. Tripod, every time.
2. Clean your front element, artificial light sources, street lights, car headlights etc. will make it flare very strongly.
3. get a lens hood, other street lights will fuck up your contrast.
4. Don't rely on autofocus when it's dark, do a test exposure.

Talk to me about racetracks, /p/. I've got some vacation time stacked up, and I think it's high time to visit one of the greats. Sebring, Laguna Seca, Le Mans, the Ring, Spa, GPLB, Mosport, Gilles Villeneuve etc.

But tell me, how is shooting at these tracks, and how is it getting around them? I dont want to pay for a flight only to find out I can only watch the race from the shitty grandstands, let alone take photos from the corners.

Laguna Seca is topping my list right now, since it's easy to get to, April weather is mild, and it's a small circular track.

Different anon but I spend a lot of time at road courses. Go to Laguna seca if it's near. Most road courses let you wander around the center of the course/paddock and up to the fences. The best spots usually require credentials. Take a telephoto for the racing and a decently wide lens for in the paddock.

If you want good light look for endurance races that go into the night. Villeneuve is the only track in your list I can think of that might restrict movement around the track, but I'm not sure.

I'm fine with the photo taking part (if being a total amateur is fine), it's the track specific tips that I'm looking for.

For example, I know Mosport has shuttle service to get out to turn 5 during the bigger races. Saves you a lot of walking. Turn 5 is excellent for catching action. You can see all of the last turn and all of the first turn from the general seating (read: grassy hill) along the front straight, and with a long lens, see right into the pits. This gives you the opportunity to catch cars as they go through (spin) the first right hand sweeper, or hit up the last left/right onto the front straight. Lots of space along the fence too. Turn 2/3 don't have much photo opportunity. You can get close to the fence, but it's very awkward. You get real close to the cars at 2's bridge, and the marshall's station at 8. Pic related, shot from 8. 105mm equiv is much too long, but I was so busy having fun, I didn't really chimp and decide to switch to a wide angle.

The paddock area is easy to walk through, and pretty great. The lower end series aren't usually fenced off, so you can get close to the cars and take a look. Just don't intrude on the actual pit areas. Track food isn't bad, for track food.

Hope to hell you're visiting on a cool day. Ontario in the summer is not for the faint of heart.

Go to office depot and pick up the biggest white cardboards you can find. Use a cstand and line it up with the curves of the car. Shine the light on the card. That way you won't have shitty reflections of your gear and can detail the curves of the car. Also try: Wetting the ground, spraying some smoke behind the car, finding a location that has a better look to it.

No, that won't work at all. It will look exactly the same as the softbox he used.

He just needs to pay closer attention to the positioning of the light as it is relative to the camera lens and ensure that the flash is not visible on the reflection of the car.

...or ensure that the flash is positioned in a place on the body lines that accentuates the body lines of the car.

Soft light is nice, but it isn't necessary for cars.

I've shot at the 12 hours of sebring a few times (which I definitely recommend, lots of good spots to shoot from without credentials). advice:

show up a few days early for all of the practice sessions and qualifying. this will give you way more opportunities and also let you scout out good spots.

get a paddock pass or whatever will get you the most access.

lower level racing leagues and lower level tracks will generally give you more access; shooting anything at all F1 is impossible without press credentials, but local level sprint cars you can go wherever, shoot anything.

I use a Younguo YN-300 panel at the moment, but Im looking for something a little brighter and usable with a large rectangular softbox. Im honestly not sure where to even begin looking. I know I want a constant light source and a large enough diffuser/soft box to help get rid of the light streaks on the paint. Anybody have any ideas?

i /think/ the photo would of been much better if the car was parked under the sunlight as it replicates a spot light

its a bit off putting to me because composition wise
- the car isnt leading you anywhere
- its kind of flat
- the background takes up most of the photo, on top of that its uninteresting

aim for tighter shots

I've actually shot in a studio like that, although I didn't really know what I was doing at the time, but it was a pretty cool experience

it's a shame how much they cost to hire though, my diy efforts at softboxes shows that I'm doing this on a shoestring at the moment haha
