Here's yet another "What to charge?" thread for your enjoyment!
TL;DR first:
I'm moving, and photography work is about to fall into my lap. I've never done this for pay, and have no idea what to charge. Any advice is appreciated.

The long version:
My life where I am is falling apart (not worth the sob story here), and I'm moving out of state. In part, I'll be close to my family for the first time in almost a decade. Leaving everything behind, I'll be seeking employment where I'm headed.
My sister's current roommate is an actress who has been getting small gigs with local commercials. She has seen some of my old photos, and has asked me if I'd be willing to do some headshots and the like. I'm already willing to do at least a little for free, for the experience.
The offer is already on the table for this actress to bring me work if she likes the results. It's show biz, so everyone is hoping to find their big break. I'd be picking up head shots, character sessions, possibly audition videos, on a regular basis.
To add another layer, several local businesses are in need of product shots, interior and exterior photos, and other advertising materials.
Of course, as this would be my first foray, I have literally no fucking clue where to begin.
I've long considered working for myself, and even if this is just part time (which is most likely), that would be extremely satisfying.
Thanks to some other hard breaks in life, I had stopped doing photography for many years. Having picked it up again, I've already got people asking for prints of my nature photography and landscapes.
I've just never worked with people as subjects,
Chels, is that you?
>>3110632
if you're a noob you're better off working under someone else
if you insist on freelancing on your own, then you're looking at shit jobs and shit clients, so expect $100-500 day
when you get medium clients, that's prolly $500-1500, like corporate or weddings
beyond that you're experienced enough and you know what to charge
>>3111435
Thank you for a real answer.
I don't consider myself a complete novice, but there are two factors putting me at a lower status for this endeavor: I have never done photography for money, and I have never worked with people as subjects.
I am not thinking I'll jump right in with high-art photos and making serious bank. But some side income would be nice.
Right /p/ usually i lurk but today i need some help :). i am currently facing a dilemma of do i move to Nikon from canon or stay. i have a privilege of being given a D800 ti play with so i could teach my way around it to help someone and i have found it to be somewhat a nice body.
So do i stick with my 5D mk3 or sell that bitch off for Nikon.

Keep what you have, stop gear fagging.
>worrying about the body
The real question is, how much do you have invested in lenses
>>3110543
Extremely valid point. only a few grand. I think i will stick with either my mk2 or see what it'll take to get a mk3/4. not that there is anything majorly wrong with my mk2.
also yes op is being a bit of a fag but this is why i asked. because sometimes i over look the simple things like >3110543 mentioned.
just bought a Kodak Disc 3100 and film, instead of progressing the film the camera just buzzes. I'm not sure what to do, help pls

i recently started using a Nikon F50 and its automatic when it comes to loading and rewinding, it even automatically set the iso of the camera, the only thing is that when i load a 36 exp film, it rewinds at 24, how do i set it 36?
>>3110127
Read the manual.
http://www.cameramanuals.org/nikon_pdf/nikon_f50.pdf
i already rode it, and there is nothing about this
Are you sure it was a 36 exp film? That camera auto rewinds and sets iso using the DX code on your film.
i shoot on film from just a month, and i would like to know how to develop like salgado o something similar, i tried to make one on photoshop with a digital camera (pic related) but i think this effect would look way better on a film

If you could upgrade this camera to any other camera for 500-1000 dollars for nature/landscape/waterfall pictures what would you choose.
It's 7 years old now and I feel an upgrade must be warranted.
>>3109441
80D. I assume you have canon lense investments.
>>3109441
A6300 for me. But thats assuming a separate budget for lenses... which I'd spend more on.
>>3109441
I moved over to sony personally. I went for the a7r, which is above your budget. However, id say look into either the a6000, a6300, or a7

Looks like rain this weekend. Any tips for shooting models in the rain?
>>3109178
Wear a poncho, get an assistant with an umbrella
Makeup runs when it's wet, so it'll need to be touched up every few shots
Keep the model happy or the photos will be shit
waterproof your cam
