This is the Film General Thread, aka /fgt/.
This is the thread for posting your film images without flushing them down the Recent Photo Toilet.
It is OK to talk about gear in this thread.
>just posting in the /fgt/ doesn't make you gay; unless you're heavily invested in third party A-mount glass
After a protracted absence from the OP role, I feel the /fgt/ has slipped far enough that it requires my gentle guidance once more. You gypsie fucks can't be trusted with anything. How hard is it to post an OC square format image that actually contains some film to start a thread? Why can't you post photos here, for the love of god? It is heartening to see the number of film-only blog threads increasing, even if many of them are started by tripfriends; /p/ is indeed a film board. However, this thread is where we need the rank snapshits to start accompanying one-liner response posts; don't be afraid to fill this thread with the kind of throwaway FILM images that characterise the digital RPT. It doesn't take away from your text-post to attach a little piccy.
>together, we can have /p/ disbanded and split into /vid/ and /film/...

Too long, didn't read.
What are some good third party a-mount lens?

10/10 would devalue and bring /fgt/ down to /rpt/ levels of quality again

What lens was that?

Hello I'm Erik Kim AMA
>>3122685
What's the idea behind your latest project?
>>3122685
Who?
>>3122685
When did you become such a nutbar?
Not really new to photography itself, but I never had a DSLR before, plus I'm a poorfag and can't afford much.
Is it the D3300 a good choice for a beginner? People have said good stuff about it, and it does have that incredible 24MP sensor, which for the price is quite good, I think? Sucks that it doesn't have an articulated screen, though.
What do you think? Maybe an offering from Canon instead?
>>3121586
Yes, it's good. The kit lens is also good.
>>3121586
i think canons low price models are inferior to nikons in terms of specs. its really important to check what glass you want to use though.
>>3121586
I bought the D3300 as my starter camera in 2014 or so. Since I was a beginner, it had more than enough features for me to use and took amazing pictures. I was using it almost daily for street photography and most weeks I did a little landscape shooting too. It always did everything I wanted and did it well, and I got plenty of great images from it. It was the perfect mix of 'just easy enough for a beginner' and 'just complex enough to take great pictures'.
I'm using a D7200 now since I actually have the experience and knowledge to value the extra features and better quality, but if I was forced to only use a D3300 even now, I woudn't feel all that limited and my shots would still look great.
TLDR. I loved the D3300 as my starter, you simply can't go wrong with it
What's the practicality of making your own lens from scratch?

>>3114232
it's called a crop factor, your camera has a smaller than standard sensor, aps-c that's 1.5 times smaller than full frame sensor, that means that you'll get 1.5 smaller field of view with your lenses, with a 50mm you get the field of view of a 75mm lens on a standard full frame sensor
What are some good vintage lenses to buy /p/?

any old Nikkor glass is good to go. The Helios isn't bad because muh bokeh.

Trying to track down a Nikon ais 50mm F1.4 at the moment.
I stay away from ebay and amazon because people jack the prices up. Vintage camera shops and charity shops are where all the good deals are at.
Swirly bokeh from the Helios is bretty good though.
>>3096382
That 50 isn't bad. It's almost optically identical to the AF-D version. Find a 105 2.5 as well.
Dumping some candids I took yesterday.
Most photos are unposed, but all that include faces were kept with the subject's permission. These are not meant to be exploitative or pornographic.

You could make the digital image look exactly like the film image if you desired to do it.
Started photography a few years back, and now got to the point of shooting some weddings for money. Its pretty fucking stressful and boring at the same time. I was never inspired, if i may use that faggot-ass word, to do this kind of mundane work. I always dreamed of being an.. artist? Like, not about that fancy natgeo job, but at least, a freelancer, someone who is able to make money off of his pixels, and not his manhours. I know this sounds pretentious artsy.
Shit's pretty depressing because I know how much of a not chance I have at all of this. But photography is literally the only thing im deeply interested in. And it hurts to know I probably will always have to be stuck at some shitty day job, just as Im now stuck in classes that dont interest me at all. Im 22, I should have some kind of a man career infront of me. But I don't want to.
How am I supposed to deal with this shit? Any freelancers on 4chan lel?
Suck a bunch of dicks.
I'm deadass.
Don't ask /p/, ask the photographers you respect that have 'made it'. Be sure to get a good sample size too. Common sense says it'll be tough so you'll need to commit fully and find a way to make it work while supporting yourself financially. I would also ask those same photographers what they'd suggest in terms of the process of becoming successful/financially independent through photography. Best of luck
>freelancer
>artist
pick only one, fagtron.
youre a complete faggot, but whats more, youre conceptually retarded. there is no wedding/freelancer dichotomy, both are cucked slave trash along with concert cucks and newborn weirdos.
you wanna be an art? do art, create series, work on projects, then try to enter the circuit. its not hard, but you need to have a certain amount of talent, a fucking voice of your own, no hard work can fake that.

Does anyone here use Silverfast SE Plus 8? I'm trying to get as flat a scan as possible, ala Alex Burke in EpsonScan, but can't figure out how to lower the gamma on the histogram.
ITT: Scanning techniques or recent scans
i use SF ai studio, put max highlights, contrast at 0. a tiny bit of exposure boost and thats about it. oh and portra NC preset or superia if fuji. would take a screenshot but that gay ass program needs the scanner to be connected.
>>3125715
as for scans, heres one: left is the right out of scanner flat shit, right is a couple seconds of meddling on hue and contrast.

this is what I want, but this program doesn't even have a max highlights dialog box, and the histogram goes to 0 but thats only the optimized option.
Ignore the edits to the curve on left, but if you can see that, its how the histogram looks from a flat scan using the Alex Burke method on EpsonScan, and the other one is the SilverFast option without the ability to open it up along the black curve more. The scans look good as they are, I'm not that upset, its just I'm worried about how thick the blacks will come out on matte paper.
Did you know that you can turn the ISO up as high as you want? Just put an artsy grain filter over the noise later.
